Procedure and Timeline

At the University of Tübingen, the overall appointment procedure can take up to 12 months. The process involves the departmental search committee, the Faculty Council, the President's Office, the University Senate Subcommittee on Structural Planning, the University Senate as a whole, as well as the Ministry of Science, Research and the Arts (MWK) of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg. The time span from the publication of a job offer to the actual offer of a professorship to the first-ranked candidate can take anywhere from four to seven months. From the offer until the acceptance of a professorship, the duration can be up to another four months.

The appointment procedure consists of the following steps: 

APPOINTMENT PROCEDURE

4 – 5 WEEKS

  • Identification of professorship to be filled
  • Job description and ad text development
  • Formation of hiring committee

3 – 6 WEEKS

For W3 and tenure track professorships
Obtaining the consent of the Ministry of Science, Research and Arts (MWK) on the basis of the job description

4 WEEKS

  • Job advertisement
  • Active recruitment

5 – 10 WEEKS

  • Review of applications and preselections
  • Invitation to a job talk
  • External review of short list

Creation of ranked hiring list (usually around three names) by the hiring committee

3 WEEKS

Approval of the ranked hiring list within the university bodies (Faculty, President´s Office, Senate)

3 – 6 WEEKS

For W3 and tenure track professorships
Obtaining the consent of the Ministry (MWK) to the ranked hiring list

2 WEEKS

Offer of the professorship to the first-ranked candidate
