Foundations at the University of Tübingen

Universitätsbund Tübingen e.V.

As an association of the Freunde der Universität Tübingen e.V., Universitätsbund Tübingen e.V. serves as the University of Tübingen's own funding association. It supports university projects in all areas, from research and teaching, studies and further scientific training to maintaining the university's external relations. Website of the Universitätsbund

It administers a number of dependent foundations which serve to promote science, research and teaching, each with a different orientation. Information on individual foundations here.

Erwin Riesch Foundation

Non-profit foundation under private law managed at the University of Tübingen. Preferably supports junior researchers, especially in the fields of biochemistry and clinical chemistry including physiology, with a focus on travel grants.

Alexander von Humboldt Foundation

Charitable foundation of the Federal Republic of Germany for the promotion of international cooperation in research. Promotes scientific cooperation between excellent foreign and German researchers in all disciplines from the postdoctoral phase onwards. Programs, fellowships and prizes for researchers who come to Germany or want to go abroad from Germany.

Baden-Württemberg Foundation

Private foundation in state ownership to promote the future of the state of Baden-Württemberg in the fields of education, research, and society and culture. Operational research funding through own thematic and open funding lines; promotion of junior researchers, for example through an elite program for postdoctoral researchers.

Carl Zeiss Foundation

Private foundation and shareholder of Carl Zeiss AG and SCHOTT AG, supports scientific and mathematical studies in research and teaching at the state universities of Baden-Württemberg, Rhineland-Palatinate and Thuringia through thematic funding lines for research projects and structural measures. Applications can only be submitted via the university management.

Fritz Thyssen Foundation

Private foundation, funds research from the humanities and social sciences as well as biomedicine.
Thematic funding lines:

  • History, language, culture
  • Image, sound and language”
  • State, economy and society
  • Molecular causes in the development of illnesses

Applications can be made for projects (including temporary position for a principal investigator), postdoc scholarschips, and support for smaller scientific conferences. Project proposals can be submitted twice a year by 15 February and 15 September.

Gerda Henkel Foundation

Non-profit foundation under private law. Project funding in the fields of archaeology, history, historical Islamic studies, art history, legal history, prehistory and protohistory, history of science.

Hector Foundations

The non-profit H.W. & J. Hector Foundation and the Hector Foundation II mainly support medical research in the field of AIDS and cancer research. The Hector Science Award recognizes outstanding achievements in research, teaching and the promotion of junior researchers in the fields of natural and engineering sciences, mathematics, computer science, psychology and medicine. At the University of Tübingen, the Foundation's donation forms the basis for the scientific work of the Hector Institute of Education Science and Psychology.

Mercator Foundation supports projects with social relevance in the following areas:

Robert Bosch Foundation welcomes applications for projects with social relevance in the areas of health, education and global issues.

Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft

Joint initiative of companies and foundations with the aim of identifying and solving structural problems in science and higher education. Advises, networks and promotes in the fields of education, science and innovation. The foundation awards prizes, promotes endowed professorships and issues various grants but does not fund individual projects.

Vector Foundation

The non-profit Vector Foundation finances scientific and technical research projects in Baden-Württemberg on the topics of climate protection in transportation and STEM innovations. Another focus is on STEM education, with projects for schoolchildren, students for master of education and teaching staff.

Volkswagen Foundation

The Volkswagen Foundation supports innovative research projects in promising areas. It pays particular attention to young researchers and to collaboration between researchers across scientific, cultural and national boundaries.
