Requirements and application

This degree program is free of admission as long as you meet the admission requirements, i.e. no application is necessary. You can enroll directly for this degree program. The study program can be started in the winter as well as in the summer semester.

The prerequisite for studying at the University of Tübingen is the general university entrance qualification, usually the Abitur, or another university entrance qualification, e.g. the Delta examination for prospective students with a Fachhochschulreife or a Fachgebundener Hochschulreife, or a university entrance qualification for those with vocational qualifications. Applicants with foreign school-leaving qualifications should contact the Department of Counseling and Admission for International Students.

In Baden-Württemberg, there is an obligation to provide proof of participation in a study orientation procedure with matriculation (enrollment) in an undergraduate degree program.

The language of study and examination is German. Individual courses may be held in English. A good knowledge of English is expected for the study of literature. Therefore, knowledge of English is required. However, formal proof of English proficiency is not required. International applicants *without* a German-language university entrance qualification must provide evidence of German language proficiency in accordance with the university's matriculation regulations (see also information on proof of linguistic study ability / DSH language test).

It is a so-called "mono-bachelor", i.e. the study is in one scientific subject. In addition to the specialized training in chemistry, the program also offers non-scientific modules in which, for example, foreign language and IT skills as well as presentation experience can be acquired.

Program details

The bachelor's degree program in chemistry covers the teaching of the structure, behavior and transformation of substances. It provides you with basic knowledge in the chemical sub-disciplines of inorganic, organic, physical and theoretical chemistry as well as basic knowledge in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics and physics. In lectures and seminars with colleagues from industry, you will gain an insight into later professional fields.

The bachelor's program in chemistry at the University of Tübingen comprises six semesters. It imparts basic knowledge in the chemical sub-disciplines of inorganic, organic, physical and theoretical chemistry as well as basic knowledge in analytical chemistry, biochemistry, mathematics and physics. Lectures and seminars are also offered together with colleagues from industry.

In addition, you can take non-scientific modules to acquire so-called "interdisciplinary qualifications" as part of the "Transdiciplinary Course Program".

As a rule, you will complete the Bachelor's program in the sixth semester with the Bachelor's thesis (B.Sc. Thesis). You can write your Bachelor's thesis in one of the three basic subjects Inorganic, Organic or Physical and Theoretical Chemistry.

The module handbook of the B.Sc. Chemistry describes the goals and structure of a degree program. In the module handbook you will find details of the type of modules offered and their respective workloads as well as the classes, requirements and assessment. An ideal course plan is set out in the module handbook to help you plan your studies. The module handbook and the exam regulations help you to understand the framework and conditions of your program, and enable you to choose the right modules/ classes.

The exam regulations of the B.Sc. Chemistry contain the legally binding regulations for a degree program. They set out, for instance, which modules must be taken and which assessment must be completed in order to successfully complete the degree program. The exam regulations also regulate how often exams may be repeated, which deadlines apply to assessment, and how the final grade is calculated. The exam regulations and the module handbook help you to understand the framework and conditions of your program, and enable you to choose the right modules/ classes.

After your studies

Graduates of chemistry programs have good career prospects, e.g. in industry, research institutes, government agencies and investigation offices.

Chemists have usually chosen a degree with a doctorate. In the meantime, not only the master's degree is a possible qualification, but also the bachelor's degree is considered to be professionally qualifying. In particular, the possibilities of continuing the studies in other subjects are considered.

In the Tübingen chemistry program, all these challenges of modern natural sciences are taught and the best prerequisites for later qualified positions are created. Therefore, even in times of crisis, well-educated chemists from Tübingen have always found good jobs in all possible areas of (large, medium and even small) industry, research institutes, public institutions or as freelancers, not only in the chemical industry, but also as management personnel

As a rule, the bachelor's degree program is followed by the Chemistry Master of Science program. The admission requirements can be found on the corresponding websites.

Admission to doctoral studies with a bachelor's degree is not possible. Admission to doctoral studies requires completion of a master's degree program.

 All degree programs
