Neurobiology - Master

From winter semester 2024/25 enrolment in the first semester will no longer be possible, as the degree programme will be discontinued and replaced by the degree programme "Neurobiology". New deadline for applications: May, 31st.

• Bachelor's degree in biology or closely related subject with a final grade of 2.50 or better.
• English language skills, level B2 (see next field for details)
• International applicants without a German-language university entrance qualification must prove German language skills, level B1 (see next field for details)

• The language of study and examination in the Master's program is English. Some elective classes are given in German.
• English language skills must be proven by TOEFL (79 IBT), or IELTS 6.5, or native English speaker, or English-language bachelor's degree or English high school leaving certificate (from a country with English as an official language), or Cambridge Certificate (FCA, CAE, CPE) level B2. Skills can also be proven by English as a first foreign language consistently up to the German „Abitur“ (final mark "gut" or better).
• International applicants without a German-language university entrance qualification must provide evidence of German language skills, exclusively by DSH1, Telc B1, TestDaF 3333, or Goethe-Zertifikat B1.

It is a so-called "mono-master", i.e. the study is done in one scientific subject.

The Master's program in Neurobiology introduces students to current experimental and data-analytical methods of neuroscientific research and enables them to carry out scientific projects independently. In keeping with the broad range of methods and animal models used by our faculty, the emphasis is on a comparative approach. Courses cover cellular, systemic, behavioral, cognitive, evolutionary, and theoretical aspects of modern, integrative neuroscience. A central position is occupied by the large-scale practical course in the 3rd semester. Small groups work on research-related projects, which can be selected from the more than 20 participating research groups. The Master's program is aimed at curious, biologically pre-educated students with an appetite for intellectual challenges and a strong interest in broad basic neurobiological research.

The language of the program is English, individual elective courses are in German.
