Requirements and application

Per year, 15 places are available and will be awarded according to qualification and experience of the applicants. The recruitment procedure for the master course is three stepped (written application, subject test, interview). 


Target audience: Applicants for the masters program must have a first degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, biomedical sciences, medicine or a related field. The program aims at students who have a strong interest in neuroscience and neural disease.

Program details

Genetic and molecular basis of neural diseases, molecular and cell biology of neurons and glia, sensory systems neuroscience, neurophysiology, neurochemistry and neurotransmitters, cellular and molecular mechanisms of learning and memory, neural plasticity and neuroregeneration, developmental neurobiology, behavioral neuropharmacology, microscopy and cell imaging techniques.

The Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience provides a research-oriented training. The curriculum includes two internships of 7 and 9 weeks, where students have the opportunity to get in contact with the research groups at the Hertie Institute for Clinical Brain Research (HIH), the German Centre for Neurodegenerative Disease (DZNE), the Center for Integrative Neuroscience (CIN), the Natural and Medical Science Institute (NMI) and the University of Tübingen (Faculty of Medicine and Faculty of Science).

Scholarships are available for excellent international students.

The masters program will last 24 months and consists of two theoretical units each followed by experimental units and a six-month’s period where students prepare their master thesis.

The Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience will provide some scholarships for international students. Nevertheless, international students are asked to also apply for a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

The Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience is located - together with the Graduate School of Neural & Behavioural Sciences and the newly established Graduate School of Neural Information Processing - in recently renovated rooms in the Anatomical Institute. In total, the rooms of the Graduate Schools comprise classrooms, a study room with library, three offices, and a kitchenette available to students and staff. The rooms are equipped with state-of-the-art multimedia facilities, computer workstations with internet connection, and a small but extensive subject-specific library with neuroscience text books and review journals. Immediately adjacent to the class- and study room are the offices of the dean of study and the course co-ordinators.

The graduate program in Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience offers a unique curriculum and exciting research opportunities for graduate students who wish to pursue careers in neuroscience either in the pharmaceutical industry or in academia. The integrated curriculum offered in this program will give students a broad expertise that is not easily achievable in any individual department.

After the master´s program, students have the opportunity to continue directly with their doctoral thesis and enter the doctoral program of the Graduate School of Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience.
