Early Career Research Group Leader for Machine Learning in Science

We are looking for aspiring scientists pursuing research on the interface between machine learning and science—by developing and applying machine learning methods in a scientific discipline, be it the natural sciences, social sciences, or life sciences. 

The early career group leader positions are especially suited for researchers, either directly after completing their PhD or with some postdoctoral experience. Our research

We are looking for a PhD student to join the project “Heterogeneous Expectations in HANK Models: Empirical Evidence, New Solution Methods, and Macroeconomic Implications” funden by the Thyssen Foundation. The project studies how households form expectations, how expectation formation differs across households, and how these differences shape business-cycle dynamics and the transmission of monetary and fiscal policy.

A companion PhD project focuses on the empirical side: identifying expectation-formation types from household surveys and narrative data. This position is designed to complement that work on the modeling and computational side. The successful candidate will develop and solve a Heterogeneous-Expectations HANK model in which households do not form full-information rational expectations, but instead use empirically grounded belief rules.

The core task is to build scalable solution methods for this class of models. The project asks whether moving away from rational-expectations fixed-point problems creates a computational “free lunch”: households solve standard dynamic decision problems given perceived laws of motion, while beliefs evolve through type-specific learning and updating rules. The resulting model should retain the discipline of heterogeneous-agent macroeconomics—dynamic optimization, distributional heterogeneity, and general equilibrium—while allowing for empirically realistic expectation formation.

Methodologically, the project connects HANK models with recent work on mean-field games, adaptive learning, hybrid structural methods, and reinforcement-learning-inspired solution algorithms. The PhD student will work on model solution, simulation, and counterfactual analysis, including distributional impulse responses and applications to monetary policy, forward guidance, fiscal multipliers, policy salience, and the macroeconomic consequences of heterogeneous belief updating.

Your profile

We are looking for a candidate who wants to build and solve quantitative macroeconomic models. The ideal candidate has a strong interest in heterogeneous-agent macroeconomics, numerical methods, and modern computational tools. A background in economics is highly welcome, but candidates from related quantitative fields such as mathematics, statistics, computer science, physics, or engineering are also encouraged to apply.

You should have strong programming skills, preferably in Python, Julia, JAX, or a comparable scientific-computing environment. Experience with dynamic programming, stochastic processes, numerical optimization, automatic differentiation, simulation methods, or high-performance computing is highly valuable. Prior exposure to HANK models, sequence-space methods, mean-field games, reinforcement learning, policy-gradient methods, or recurrent neural networks is an advantage, but not a strict requirement.

The position is particularly suited for someone who is excited by implementation-heavy research: translating economic structure into algorithms, testing solution methods, debugging numerical models, and using simulations to answer substantive macroeconomic questions.

The position is embedded in the Regional Centre for Sustainable Adaptation to Global Change in the Middle East (SAGE). SAGE is one of four Global Centres for Climate and Environment funded by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). It is coordinated by the University of Tübingen (Germany) and An-Najah National University (Nablus, Palestine) and is a cooperation among scientists, stakeholders, and students from Palestine, Jordan, and Germany. The aim of the SAGE Centre is to empower societies in the Middle East to find science-based solutions to adaptive and sustainable management of natural resources in an era of global change. Furthermore, SAGE aims to contribute to capacity building and conduct multilateral and interdisciplinary research on areas of concern.

The core role of the PostDoc is to foster transboundary collaboration in biodiversity conservation and adaptive resource management within SAGE. A key aspect is the coordination of data collection and analysis within transboundary long-term ecological research sites, supervision of PhD students in Palestine and Jordan, and public outreach and scientific publications. – What does tool use reveal about the impact of resource exploitation during the transition from foraging to farming at Liang Bua, Flores, Indonesia?

The ‘Human Origins: Excellence Cluster of Integrative Human Origins Studies’ is a newly started Cluster of Excellence at the University of Tübingen. It focuses on the comprehensive, bio-cultural investigation of human evolution, to be examined through the integration of diverse disciplines, diachronically and at different scales throughout the last 5 million years of human evolution. 

The position will be located in the Laboratory for Experimental Archaeology and Neotaphonomy (LEArN), led by Dr. E. Grace Veatch, and will investigate one of the central questions in human evolution: How did environmental and/or anthropogenic changes impact the most significant transition in subsistence strategies (i.e., farming) observed in the genus Homo, and what does this tell us about the evolution of the human ecological niche? In this project, we will combine innovative stone tool functional analysis, experimental archaeology, and spatial analyses to understand how changes in resource availability and human migration impacted the adaptation of agriculture and domestication within an insular ecosystem in Indonesia. The aim is to utilize the abundant material culture (stone and shell) from the Holocene deposits at Liang Bua and develop innovative theoretical and methodological approaches to investigating human behavior in Island Southeast Asia. 

The position should start as soon as possible (flexible by agreement) and is limited to three years, with a possibility for extension.

Type of work

The doctoral researcher will combine fieldwork with experimental archaeology to understand the dynamic behavioral processes involved with the creation of the material record at Liang Bua. The central aspect of the project involves stone tool analysis, shell taphonomy, and 3-dimensional imaging techniques. The student will be trained in both theoretical and methodological applications within the archaeological sciences and have the opportunity to collaborate with scholars of closely related disciplines (such as stable isotope analyses, paleogenomics, and morphology) within the Cluster of Human Origins and related departments.

Your profile

• Master’s degree or equivalent in archaeology or another relevant field.

• Background in stone tool analyses and taphonomy.

Qualification and skills
Candidates should have good communication skills and motivation to familiarize themselves with new subject areas. Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d, salary grade A13)

The position is initially offered for three years, with the possibility of a three-year extension.

Your responsibilities:

• Teaching (4 contact hours per week) in the areas of knowledge, communication, and media psychology
• Contributing to examinations, supervising student theses, and participating in administrative duties
• Conducting independent research aligned with the group’s research focus

Your profile:

• An excellent PhD in psychology, cognitive science, or a related discipline
• Strong background in experimental research
• A clear research interest in applied cognitive psychology, particularly in areas such as:
  • Cognitive processing of politicized or controversial information
  • Narrative comprehension
  • Human–AI interaction
