Ph.D. or Post-Doc position (m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 100%) – Wireless Spectrum Allocation using Multi-Agent Reinforcement Learning: Theory and Implementation

Project- and job description:

Spectrum allocation, which is a classical challenge in wireless communications networks, has recently entered a new phase due to the emergence of concepts such as IoT and artificial intelligence. While the heterogeneous structure of an ultra-dense network renders a centralized spectrum allocation implausible, one can rely on the learning and decision-making capacity of wireless devices to enable distributed spectrum sharing efficiently. Multi-agent reinforcement learning is a mathematical framework for such a scenario. The goal of this project is to develop decision-making strategies for efficient spectrum sharing in the framework of MA-RL. The strategies shall then be implemented and evaluated in a wireless testbed consisting of software-defined radio devices.

Profile description:

Applicants must possess a recent excellent M.Sc. or Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering (wireless communications), computer science (machine learning and artificial intelligence), or another tightly related field. A strong interest to implement wireless communications systems, and previous work experience with hardware such as FPGA, are necessary. Good programming skills (at least MATLAB or C++) and English proficiency are also essential. A strong mathematical background and knowledge of German language are highly desired.
