Electronic ankle tags only moderately effective

In study for Justice Ministry, Tübingen criminologists advise against wider use of ankle monitoring bracelets

Criminologists at the University of Tubingen have recommended that the use of electronic ankle bracelets should NOT be broadened. Some 75 offenders in Germany currently wear the electronic tags; but the experts say they are labor-intensive for the relevant authorities and interfere too strongly in the basic rights of the wearer. Nor has it been proven that the tags help prevent repeat offences. The Tubingen criminologists conducted a Germany-wide study for the Justice Ministry, interviewing police, judges, and penal officials as well as offenders involved.

The report (in German) is available on the Justice Ministry website: <link https: www.bmjv.de shareddocs downloads de pdf bereichministerium>
