In an increasingly international business environment, the following management challenges gain more and more in importance:

• the development of an integrated HR development and management strategy across national boundaries (strategic international HRM);
• the development of policies regarding the selection and training of expatriates, the integration of inpatriates and the organization of the repatriation process (operative international HRM);
• the development of strategies and policies with regards to the post-merger and -acquisition integration process, the set-up of multinational teams, the organization of cross-cultural communication processes and the dealing with language differences (cross-cultural management);

• the development of strategies and policies defining the right balance between standardization and localization of management practices in a multinational corporation, coordinating and controlling foreign subsidiaries and organizing the knowledge transfer between headquarters and subsidiaries (headquarters-subsidiary relations).
