Aim of the study
As part of the governmental project “Kläranlage Tübingen” we presently run an active gammarid monitoring in the Neckar River adjacent to the sewage treatment plant Tubingen-Lustnau. The project accompanies the stepwise addition of two treatment stages, namely a sand filter and an ozonation unit, within in the next three years. By using gammarids as bioindicators we aim at assessing the water quality within this river section and how it changes with the additional treatment stages. I will be using different biomarkers, such as increased heat shock protein and oxidative stress levels, changes in fertility, and to some extent histological abnormalities, in order to investigate the health status of the exposed gammarids.
