SmartSand aims at providing home automation for the building of the Department of Computer Science which is located at the Sand. Here is a map of the extensive Sand area. Common home automation frameworks such as OpenHAB are designed for single user operation and limited wireless communication reach. They serve as gateways and user frontends for the Internet of Things (IoT). To make OpenHAB2 applicable for SmartSand, we add user administration and management with fine-granular access rights, user authentication and authorization, as well as an extension for the distributed use of OpenHAB2. The resulting modification is called OpenHAB-DM (Distributed Multiuser setup). Detailed information about OpenHAB-DM can be found in a technical report.
Next steps include a field trial supporting heating control, sensors for temperature, closed/open windows, camera, and presence detectors.
