International Study Programs: At the University of Tübingen, international study programs are programs that can be studied completely in English. An entry requirement is the evidence of English (language efficiency equivalent level B2 of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). German skills are not necessary.
Multilingual Study Programs: For studying multilingual study programs, German skills are necessary and have to be prooved. However, a significant part (> 40%) of the modules are taught in English.
The M.Sc. program "Applied & Environmental Geoscience" is an international research-oriented two-year study program targeting at the evaluation of environmental problems and the development of ecologically and economically sound mitigation measures. Special emphasis is given on environmental problems in the subsurface such as industrial, urban and agricultural pollution of drinking water supplies from groundwater resources, the non-sustainable use of natural resources, the impact of short and long term waste disposal, use of geothermal energy, impact of climate and land-use change on soil and water quality, among others.

This two-year, in-depth interdisciplinary program provides students with a detailed understanding of the human past, focusing on a combination of disciplines in the natural sciences. Students specialize in one of six subfields and tailor courses and research with top scientists on staff. Students acquire practical and theoretical knowledge using cutting-edge tools and gain experience in the lab and the field. An early integration in ongoing research projects and the development of scientific skills allows students to undertake projects of their choice, in consultation with their advisors, to investigate current questions in any field of archaeology.

The focus of the master program Astro and Particle Physics is put on a distinct quantiative approach as usual in physics, along with the acquisition of essential practical skills with respect to problem sets in the field of Astro and Particle Physics.
The Master Astro and Particle Physics is an international research-oriented two year program established by the Kepler-Center. This programme connects science from the fields of particle physics, astrophysics and cosmology and combines different disciplines in experimental and theoretical physics, astronomy and astrophysics. This program offers a wide choice of courses in computer science and life sciences and allows students to choose their subjects according to interest. Students will attend lectures, seminars, and project lab courses under the supervision of scientists who introduce them to basic and applied research and current topics in bioinformatics. As interdisciplinarity is an important aspect, the Master’s thesis will be supervised by both a professor of bioinformatics or computer science and a professor or faculty member of the life sciences. This program can be studied completely in English by students with a Bachelor’s degree in bioinformatics.

The Nano-Science Master’s program is offered by the three Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Physics, which all have a long tradition and a good reputation in Germany. For teaching, we use modern course and lab facilities and offer a broad spectrum of methods, as well as cutting edge technologies.
In the first two semesters knowledge on the core subjects biology, chemistry, and physics is deepened on a broad basis. The third semester is devoted to the module Independent Studies. At this stage of study students receive the opportunity to discover and to study their areas of special interest within the subject of Nano-Science. For example, studies within this module may include internships abroad or industrial training. The last semester is reserved for the Master’s thesis.

The latest offshoot, the Graduate School of Neural Information Processing, started teaching in the winter term of 2011. This school covers theoretical and computational aspects of neuroscience, a field of research that has become increasingly important in the past years.

The Master’s Degree program (2 semesters) in the department’s groups is research-oriented. The aim is to develop skills for independent scientific work. The program requires the completion of a Master’s thesis.
We offer a double degree program in which students of the universities of Tübingen and Trento (Italy) spend 2 semesters at the partner institution to broaden their education and experience. The Double Master Program provides a framework for international cooperation between both universities. Inspired by the idea of mutual recognition of studies abroad characteristic of the SOCRATES (ERASMUS) program of the European Community, the proposed curriculum involves a first period spent at the home institution followed by a stay abroad in order to extend the acquired competences in a specific scientific field. For the thesis, a research project involving supervisors from both institutions is envisaged.
This course provides students with an understanding of the manifold life processes in plants at biochemical, molecular, cellular and physiological levels. The curriculum covers the theoretical explanatory approaches, principles and methods in the life sciences as well as the distinctive features of the molecular life processes in plants. The focus of the course is on the in-depth scientific investigation of the molecular mechanisms that control the processes of plant development and adaption to biotic and abiotic environments and enable the interplay of the developmental and adaptive processes. Course language is English. Some individual required elective courses are conducted in German.

This course provides instruction on the origin, the evolution and the conservation of complex biological systems in time (current - historical) and space (local - global) and integrates processes from the genetic level through the organism to the ecological communities. The curriculum covers synthetic fundamental principles as well as applied, environmentally relevant aspects. The focus of the course is on the detailed scientific investigation of the evolution of organisms and the importance of their interactions in their environment. Course language is English. Some individual required elective courses are conducted in German.

This is an interdisciplinary program with a key focus on research. It builds on the wide range of knowledge in geosciences, biology, ecology, chemistry, physics and mathematics obtained in an undergraduate science degree. The program involves a quantitative understanding of the complex interactions between lithosphere, pedosphere, biosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere as well as relevant methodological skills for successfully addressing environmental science issues.

The University of Tübingen has established a study programme with the Università degli Studi di Trento, that offers the possibility to get a double degree Master of Science Mathematics at both universities. Students from Tübingen, who wish to participate in the programme, have to have the admission qualification for the Master of Science Mathematik. During the first year they take the regular courses of the study programme Master of Science in Tübingen. In the second year they then study at the partner university in Trento and acquire the necessary credits in the study programme there. After successful completion of the programme the students get the degree Master of Science Mathematik of the University of Tübingen and the degree Laurea Magistrale in Matematica of the partner university in Trento. For students from Tübingen there are besides the usual accounting fees no actual tuition fees at the partner university in Trento. All courses at the University of Trento are taught in English.

Medical informatics is the interdisciplinary science of systematic exploitation, management, storage, processing and provision of data, information and knowledge in medicine and healthcare. Apart from the basic principles, concepts and methods of computer science, the Master’s degree course in medical informatics teaches basic principles, concepts and methods of human medicine and natural sciences. Graduates will be trained to work closely with healthcare professionals to develop, apply and manage computational tools to address a wide range of medical questions.
By appropriate selection of modules from the various fields of study, students may complete the entire degree course in English.

This program provides instruction on the complex regulation of cellular and immunological processes in humans and animals. The focus of this area of specialization is on the in-depth scientific investigation of the molecular mechanisms that regulate the function and behavior of cells and, if defective, lead to disease. The experimental subjects will be model organisms, such as Drosophila or Caenorhabditis and cell cultures from single animal or human cells. The experimental results will provide insight into, e.g., cell functions in cell clusters, cell differentiation and organ development. The immunological processes will be examined with particular reference to disease-related malfunctions, as they occur in cases of immunodeficiency or in the context of tumor immunology. The Masters Degree Program in Biology / Area of Specialization: Neurobiology at the University of Tübingen aims at enabling highly motivated students to unravel some of the brains mysteries. The Masters Degree Program has a strong foundation in vertebrate systems neuroscience, offering training to study human and animal behaviour and their underlying neural circuits and systems. Convergent training of a broad range of behavioural, neurophysiological and computational methodologies will be offered in an inspiring and research-oriented atmosphere.
