Experience Differences: The Metaphor of Travelogues during Taiwan's Martial Law Period (1949-1987)

Mittwoch, 17. Juli 2019, 18:15 Uhr, Hörsaal 0.01, Keplerstraße 2, 72074 Tübingen

Zum Inhalt:

The travelogues during the martial law period in Taiwan (1949-1987) were diverse and complex, not only for their way of viewing the world, but also for the development of Taiwanese society, history and culture. I explore the special qualities of Yin Hai-kuang, Wu Zhuo-liu and Zhong Mei-yin’s travelogues during the martial law period in Taiwan. This is based on the multi-dimensional criticism and the worldliness theme of their travelogues. Whether it is a private letter, a piece of newspaper, a magazine or a book with a photo attached, travel writing exceeds a flexible form, showing implications of the words. Although Taiwanese people’s visit to the US can be placed in the context of the cultural foreign policy since the Cold War in the US, this period overlaps with the martial law period in Taiwan. Therefore, the travelogues implied different perspectives and were able to provide references to other countries’ critical theory. Yin Hai-kuang’s travelogues showcase a resistance strategy of a thinker facing the hegemony from the KMT to Taiwan with blunt criticism or metaphors. The multidimensional criticism is aimed at the Chinese centralism, the party-centrism of settlers in Taiwan, and also criticizes American centralism. Such a multi-objective criticism model shows the close relationship between literature and power relations.

Lecture of Dr. Cao Jin in Hefei, Anhui

Dr. Cao Jin gave a lecture at the international conference "Science, Western Learning and Confucianism" in Hefei (28 April to 1 May 2019)

As a member of the DFG project „Translating Western Science, Technology and Medicine to Late Ming China: Convergences and Divergences in the Light of the Kunyu gezhi (Investigations of the Earth’s Interior; 1640) and the Taixi shuifa (Hydromethods of the Great West; 1612)”, Dr. Cao Jin 曹晋 was invited to attend a conference entitled “Science, Western Learning and Confucianism: Commemorating the 390th Anniversaries of the Compilation of the Chongzheng Reign Treatises on Calendrical Astronomy”, which was held at the University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei from 28 April to 1 May 2019. In her talk with the title “Collateral Benefit: The Calendar Bureau and the Transfer of Western Mining Knowledge into China (1635-1684)” she presented recent findings about the institutional context in which the rediscovered manuscript of the Kunyu gezhi (Investigations of the Earth’s Interior) was created. Her study revealed, how knowledge transmission in the fields of mining and metallurgy was organized in the Calendar Bureau by Adam Schall von Bell and his collaborators. Though the Kunyu gezhi was already completed as early as 1640, it could not be printed and put into use because of the collapse of the Ming dynasty. Different than in the case of the calendar reform, the Manchus decided not to put it into action after coming to power. Its traces were lost during the early decades of the Qing period. Nonetheless there are signs that the application of Western knowledge in metal production may have become a topic again, when Liu Yunde 劉蘊德, then vice-head of the Directorate of Astronomy was entrusted with the operation of a silver mine in Shanxi. This shows impressively that for almost half a century, the systematic introduction of Western mining knowledge into China with the help of the Calendar Bureau and successively the Directorate of Astronomy was attempted and remained an option, which, however eventually vanished unused.
The presentation aroused much interest among participants and engendered fruitful discussion. Dr. Cao Jin received inspiring questions and helpful suggestions which were of great value for the deepening of her further research in this field. Many thanks go to Prof. Shi Yunli 石云里 from the University of Science and Technology of China for the organization of this great meeting.

Juli: A Tale of Two Villages

Am Montag, den 23. Juli 2018, hält Prof. Lin Kuoming 林國明, Direktor des Departments of Sociology der National Taiwan University (Taipei) einen Gastvortrag am ERCCT. Titel des Vortrages ist "A Tale of Two Villages: The Practice of Participatory Budgeting in Taiwan" und zum Inhalt macht Prof. Lin folgende Angaben:

Since 1994, the Taiwanese state has initiated community-building projects in the hope of nourishing bottom-up participation in local communities. These projects to some extent brought about changes in local organizations and the identities of communities. After twenty years of operation, however, these projects were generally regarded as not “participatory” enough. To deepen democratic participation, in 2015, the Taiwanese state introduced the practice of participatory budgeting (PB) in several communities, where residents gather to discuss and decide how to spend public money. I will examine how the PB projects guided by the ideas of deliberative democracy actually work in two villages with different trajectories of community-building. In contrast to Habermasian theories of deliberative democracy, I use these empirical cases to illustrate the points that the actual working of public deliberation is influenced by cultural categories, solidarity and social organizations in concrete conditions. Looking at the interaction level, my analysis will provide an understanding of how the Taiwanese state’s top-down efforts of democratizing society were conditioned by local peculiarities which previous state actions helped to shape.

Ehem.

Lecture: Popular Science and Superstition in the Age of Evidential Learning: Zheng Guangzu's Miscellaneous Notes (BIAN He, Princeton Univ.)

April 24, 2018, 16Uhr c.t. in R 42

Prof. BIAN He 邊和 "is a historian of late imperial / early modern China. Her research interests span many topics pertaining to the question of authority and variation in China’s traditional culture, particularly in medicine and the natural sciences, between the sixteenth and nineteenth centuries. Overall, her passion lies in writing a new kind of Chinese cultural history that foregrounds knowledge of all kinds, and is also rigorously contextualized by institutional, social, and economic conditions of the day.

Professor Bian's first book, Know Your Remedies: Pharmacy and Early Modern Culture in China, 1500-1800 is near completion under contract with the Princeton University Press. This book sheds new light on China’s early modern condition by investigating the transformation and diversification of the encyclopedic pharmacopeia known as bencao (materia medica). In so doing, this study also reveals the material underpinnings of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) from the perspective of its pharmacy, and argues that the expansion of TCM into an integrated cultural and business enterprise in fact had its recent origin in the 17th-18th centuries.

Future research plans include a social history of medical recipes in late imperial China, a study of humans and objects in the Old Manchu Archive (Jiu Manzhou dang), and Chinese medicinal trade in the long nineteenth century.
