Janine Schwarz

Research Fellow

Janine Schwarz is a PhD candidate and research fellow at the American Studies Department. Her dissertation project focuses on domestic noir fiction as a subgenre of crime fiction. She did her state examination in English and Latin in October 2017 and April 2018 respectively. Her final thesis in the teaching degree program is titled “John Adams in a New Light? The Representation of the Second President in Poetry of the Early American Republic and the Eponymous HBO Series.” She has previously worked as a research assistant at the American Studies Department and as Grant Manager and Project Administrator of the EU COST Action “Comparative Analysis of Conspiracy Theories (COMPACT)” of which Michael Butter is the vice-president. Her research interests include American literature and culture from the 18th century to the present, crime fiction with a focus on domestic noir, the heroization of U.S. presidents from Washington to Lincoln, film and television studies as well as reality TV studies, and popular culture.
