Prolonged and complicated wound healing increasingly becomes a problem of an ageing society. In Germany the estimated number of patients suffering from chronic non-healing wounds is 2 million. An analysis of the consultation hours in Tuebingen revealed that the number of healed wounds for patients older than 70 years was almost 25% lower than for younger persons. The chronic character of the wounds was stressed by the high recurrence rate, the existence of several wounds per patient and the occurence of accompanying wound infections.

In the surgical consultation hours patients with problematic wounds are treated with an interdisciplinary approach in order to optimize the healing process. New therapy methods are tested by clinical studies, furthermore, a continuous quality check of all treatment processes is pursued with a special documentation system.
