Graduate training

The PhD candidates of the PhD network will get the chance to participate in all offers of the Graduate Academies of the University of Tübingen.

As a central element of the PhD network, the participants of the PhD network will be systematically supported in their PhD projects by a specific study programme. This programme is based on several pillars.

· The core of the graduate training will be the PhD counselling meeting with the two supervisors (every third week). In these meetings, the PhD candidates have to present ongoing work and can talk about discipline-specific and technical problems of their research. PhD candidates can, if necessary, also discuss unforeseen difficulties with their supervisors upon consultation.

· A second element will be the Transdisciplinary Method and Theory Counselling and Discussion Meetings. In these meetings, all PhD candidates will meet in order to discuss theories, terms, and methodological aspects of interdisciplinary research, for example on the topics of “biopsychosocial models”, “understanding of health“, or “prevention strategies”. In these meetings, candidates have to present their conceptual frameworks, their methodological approaches and discuss relevant practical methodological problems. Based on these presentations, methods skills in the area of multivariate statistics, multi-level analysis, multivariate statistics, triangulation of different data types, case analysis, and data base storing will be consolidated.

· A third element is the Overall Presentation and Work Discussion Group Meeting. In this meeting, the PhD candidates will present their work in front of all supervisors and PhD candidates. The presentations will be discussed and advice will be given. The Overall Presentation and Work Discussion Group Meetings also have a coordinative function in order to plan the research agenda and prepare papers. However, for the Overall Presentation and Work Discussion Group Meetings, the scholarship holders are expected to show a high level of self-initiative.

· A fourth element of the graduate study programme will be the inclusion of the PhD candidates into the Bern-Tübingen-Doctorate Programme for Interdisciplinary Sports Science. In this Interdisciplinary PhD Colloquium, the group will discuss opportunities and limitations of interdisciplinary research. External speakers or postdocs will be invited for this programme in order to get valuable suggestions and feedback.

· As a special Career Service, workshops with the involved university teachers and other experts will be offered about the aspects of publication strategies, acquiring third party funds, academic self-administration, university management, and university didactics. In this regard, the improvement of the employability of PhD candidates will be a major goal. The respective training will focus on communication skills, ability to work in a team, expertise in presentation techniques, as well as the ability to compress and structure information and prepare it for different target groups.

· Furthermore, the candidates will organise a transdisciplinary translation symposium with researchers and experts of the field at the end of the third year.

The graduate study programme will be complemented by two (partly) voluntary modules:

· The PhD candidates will have the opportunity to assist in research-oriented teaching in master seminars in the field of sport psychology, sport medicine, sport sociology, and health promotion.

· Besides the “official” graduate programme, the candidates can participate in (international) conferences and PhD symposia outside Tübingen. These conferences and symposia are supposed to not only offer scientific platforms in order to present projects and papers, but also make the research training group visible to the outside.
