World Café discussion “AI in Research and Teaching” - 12th November
“AI in Research and Teaching”
Wednesday, 4pm c.t. in room 101 (Hegelbau)
Input talk by Dr. Lukas Griessl, Ludwig Uhland Institute of Historical and Cultural Anthropology, University of Tübingen
Abstract
This World Café discussion, “AI in Research and Teaching” invites students, lecturers, and researchers to explore how artificial intelligence is reshaping the university experience — from learning design and academic integrity to research practice and scholarly communication. Dr. Lukas Griessl will give a short input talk presenting ethnographic findings, partly collected through AI-based media diaries, on how students and researchers at the University of Tübingen use generative AI in their academic work, and how they navigate and justify these practices. This will be followed by small-group conversations, in which participants will reflect on both the opportunities and challenges of AI: how it can enhance creativity, efficiency, and collaboration, and how it raises new ethical, pedagogical, and institutional questions. We will discuss questions such as: i) In what parts of the research process (e.g., literature review, data analysis, writing) can AI genuinely enhance quality or efficiency?, ii) What are the ethical boundaries of using AI in research?, iii) What kinds of assessments remain meaningful when students can use AI to generate text or solve problems? The session aims to foster critical dialogue, share diverse perspectives, and identify practical steps for using AI wisely and transparently across teaching and research contexts.
