Report: The Dance Evening
Dance is an art form that generally refers to movement of the body, usually rhythmic and to music, used as a form of expression, performance setting and that's what the evening was all about. Enthusiastically we gazed at Phillina and Andreas as they beautifully illustrated how to go about doing the Waltz which is a slow dance that requires sliding through the floor. They broke down the steps to us thought us some very interesting dance styles such as waltz, cha-cha, salsa & disco dance. At first we did our little practice with our partners, *NB: most of us had never done these types of dances before but we learned quite fast. The music was then played and then the most humorous moment began. We bumped into each other, lost our footing but we never gave up. Phillina explained that both the lady and the man must maintain a posture whereby the lady is soft and the man firm and in control. My personal favourite was the 1-2 cha-cha-cha, abit challenging than the previous as its faster and especially when it came to turning however because of having a great teacher and a partner that was “not so bad” I was able to conquer the cha-cha. We followed up with the SALSA, the steps were similar to the cha-cha but required more creativity and the movement of hips, and the man had to impress the lady with their unique styles. Last but not least, Phillina & Andreas taught us the Disco dance, that is dance you can do when you out with friends, it was awesome….we were spinning around and turning drifting away from partners back and forth. We came to the end of our dance class, by doing a Traditional Zulu dance called “UKUSINA” for Phillina and her partner Andreas, Barbara Owen.
It was such wonderful fun filled evening for all of us, shared lots of laughter and smile. The overall experience on its own was phenomenal.
