Folkdance

On Saturday, 12 January, we were privileged to learn about German folk dance; an interesting, historic aspect of German culture, which was something new to most of us. As a group we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The experience was lovely and a lot of fun. It gave us an insight into German culture and rituals, an insight that was not only theoretically learnt but experienced too!

To add to the vibe, four members of our group tried some of the outfits on and we danced in them. What I found most interesting was the dance in which the women not only see the men but choose one. I noted that women had a choice and the right to follow their desires; something which I hold very dear to me.

When it came down to the actual dance, experiencing the manner in which previous generations did things and fell in love seemed superficial at first, but really sweet nonetheless. Elisabeth was a good dance instructor as she made it easy for everyone to learn.

I don't know if I'll be folk dancing any time soon, but, if so I look forward to it and may even add my own South African spice. Memories of the day will forever be alive in our minds.
