Report about Art

by Anita Funke

I am one of those people who love art. There is nothing quite like line and colour to express emotion, to represent a soul.

To see a real Warhol, a real Klimt, a real Dalí, was great. One studies these big names, one sees slides of "Green Coca-Cola bottles", and one learns that yellow-ochre is used to create a feeling of nausea, but its quite another thing to stand before the paintings themselves. One sees the textures of the brushstrokes (or paint-splashes, when it's Pollock) and all the little details otherwise missed.

The Würth Gallery was a similarily stimulating experience. Several of the themes examined by the South American artist, Botero, were familiar to us as South Africans - Themes such as oppression and abuse, and power.

It was encouraging to see that several young artist's paintings have found homes in German galleries; a career in art is often a gamble. If I ever come to Germany again, I hope to see new galleries, with new names, and new styles. A country with a lot of art is a rich country.
