German Folk dance and Songs

by Ayanda Mtshizana

The German Folk Dance and Folk Song were nothing we ever imagined, we were sceptical at the beginning and thought that it would be boring. There was a theory and a practice section. We started with the practicle section whereby we learnt some upbeat moves that gave us an adrenalin rush. These moves were also a good excercise for the day, I think I lost a kilo or two. We learnt a variety of dance moves, but polka was everyone's favourite. Some of the students tried on the traditional dance outfits and looked absolutely WUNDERBAR!!!

We also sang two German songs with the accomplice of a guitar and sounded beautiful. In the theory section we learnt about the origins of Folk Dance and Song and how it was used for propaganda purposes during the 2nd World War. It was interesting to know that there are clubs that teach Folk Dance and Song and that competitions are also held. Traditional clothes are not compulsory and there are also many different steps and movements with each region having its own.

WIR HABEN SEHR VIEL SPASS GEHABT!
