Tübingen-South Africa Program 2006

Reception with the university's Rector
Kleiner Senat, Neue Aula, 20th January 2006, 18h00

by Lindiwe Zandile Joan Mkhize

South Africa is a country known for its rich diversity in culture and on the night of the reception it was our time as South Africans to show our fellow Germans how beautiful and diverse our cultures are. We were dressed up in our own traditional attires, the Zulu's, Xhosa, Sotho, Indian and many more. The hall was livened up by our bright colours as well as the beautiful African voices. We were privileged to
have been joined by many important guests. And as we mingled with the guests we were able to explain to them the symbolism of our traditional clothes.

When the Rector gave his speech I was moved by his statement that, whenever the South African group comes to Tubingen the place is livened up with colour. This statement made me feel proud and I realised that culture is something which should be valued and treasured because it defines us as individuals.

I have also learnt to appreciate other different cultures and I believe that Germany has a beautiful culture as well. Being part of the programme was amazing and I would personally like to thank all those who made it possible for all of us to experience Germany. This experience has taught me a lot about the German culture but most importantly it has taught me to value and appreciate my own culture.
Vielen Dank!
