Tübingen South Africa Program 2010

Report: "Media Workshop" by Jo-Marie van Zyl

For the first time in my life I was really excited to attend a media workshop presented by Mr Stephan Anders because I knew that I was not going to be disappointed. All the other events we already attended were so excellent and therefor I also knew this lecture is going to be even more interesting!!!!

Firstly Mr Anders started the media workshop by giving us examples of what the German media is about. Later on the class talked about certain pictures and the influence they have. We also talked about the circulation of selected newspapers, general magazines and news magazines in Germany.

During the two hours of class we also learned about the Southwest Publishing House (Südwest Presse) which is situated in ULM. Interesting facts about the Südwest Presse we learned were for example that 18 publishing houses joined together in order to cooperate, that they have about 900 000 daily readers and that the most read regional newspaper on a daily basis in Baden-Württemberg, is more than 345 000 papers a day.

We ended the conversation by having a debate on what freedom of expression really means and the consequences it have.

This media workshop made me realised that no matter where you are in this world of ours, no person can live without any form of media - thank you "Tübingen South Africa program 2010" for making me realise that!!!
