'True Torment Lies Within': Madness and Gothic Womanhood in Ninja Theory's Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2027)

Amina A. Touzos (sie/ihr) ist Doktorandin in der von der DFG-Forschungsgruppe "CORE" (FOR 5404) an der Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz. Bis 2024 war sie Stipendiatin des dortigen Graduiertenkollegs "DIAPASON". In ihrer Promotionsarbeit konzentriert sie sich auf interdisziplinäre Ansätze in den Game Studies und den Medical Humanities.

Ihr Vortrag mit dem Titel "Madness and Gothic Womanhood in Hellblade: Senua's Sacrifice (2017)" kombiniert Ansätze aus den Gothic Studies, den Game Studies und den Medical Humanities. Sie wird über die Darstellung des 'madwoman in the attic'-Motivs in Hellblade sprechen und untersuchen, wie dieses mit einem spezifischen Modus des Gothic sowie mit der Repräsentation von psychischer Gesundheit/Krankheit im Genre des Videospiels zusammenhängt. Der Vortrag findet auf Englisch statt.

Amina A. Touzos (she/her) is a PhD researcher in the DFG-funded research group “CORE” (FOR 5404) at Johannes Gutenberg Universität Mainz. In 2024 she completed the doctoral research training group “DIAPASON.” Her doctoral research focuses on interdisciplinary approaches to video game studies and the medical humanities. 

Her talk on “Madness and Gothic Womanhood in Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice” (2017) combines approaches in Gothic studies, video game studies, and the medical humanities. Here, she speaks about the portrayal of the “madwomen in the attic” trope in Hellblade and how it relates to a specific Gothic mode and portrayals of mental health/illness in video games more generally.
