About the Lecture: International law is in crisis. Rules that were thought to be fundamental to modern world politics are being broken and challenged. How do we make sense of the current state and relevance of international law? Taking a socio-political approach, this lecture connects the current crisis of international law and institutions to deeper-seated political and ethical struggles about the constitution of international order.

Dennis R. Schmidt is an Assistant Professor in International Relations at Durham University and the 2024/2025 Joachim Herz Fellow at the Hamburg Institute for Advanced Study. His work sits at the intersection of law, ethics, and politics at the global level, exploring how international law and institutions shape, and are shaped by, changing ideas and patterns of global order.
