Li ist Doktorand und beschäftigt sich mit Wetterextremen wie Hitzewellen und Starkniederschlägen in den mittleren Breitengraden. Sein Ziel ist es, die Entwicklung von Extremen unter dem Einfluss des Klimawandels zu untersuchen. In der Vergangenheit erforschte er die Auswirkungen von Taifunen auf den oberen Ozean, die El Niño-Southern Oscillation, die Rolle der Meteorologie bei der Luftverschmutzung und mehr.

Lis Forschung wird durch ein Stipendium des China Scholarship Council finanziert.
