work of their research groups. Of course, talks like that are very helpful for a student trying to
figure out the right path for them. But what about working outside of academia? To answer that
question, we set out to visit the family-owned pharmaceutical company “Boehringer Ingelheim”
in Biberach where we got a tour of the company premises followed by multiple interesting
presentations about different roles in the pharmaceutical industry ranging from upstream
research and development over production to quality control. Many questions were answered,
and our hosts seemed excited to talk with us about their careers and their work.
I’m sure for many of us this visit was a very positive experience and for those considering a
career outside of academia it was helpful to get a clearer picture on opportunities in the private
sector.

The program is aimed at students with a particular scientific interest and talent. In 2024, the spokespersons of our cluster nominated two students of our Microbiology master program, Mareike Danne and Niklas Friedrich, for the scholarship.
We congratulate Mareike on winning the Wübben Foundation Student Grant!
Mareike is also a scholarship holder of the EXIST-Women funding program.
