Archaeological Research in Sardinia

The Project ARS - Archaeological Research in Sardinia represents the continuation of the MCF Project “Phoenician and Punic Cult-Places and Rites in the Ancient Mediterranean" carried out at the University of Tübingen in the frame of the M4Human Programme, provided by the Gerda Henkel Foundation in collaboration with the European Commission under the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme for Research.

The project is focused on the study of some specific contexts of Sardinia – in particular sacred spaces and ritual dynamics – during the 1st millennium BC. and is constituted by different parts, specifically centred on known contexts (Section I - Rituals and Insularity) and unpublished materials and contexts (Section II - Field work). One of the main objectives of the project is the reconstruction of a general overview of the Phoenician and Punic cult-places of the island, taking into due consideration the multitasking role that the so-called Phoenicians played in the ancient world, from pre-classical times to Christian era. In the multifaceted dimension of the Mediterranean basin as a whole, they continuously interacted with different ethnic components (substrates, parastrates and adstrates), leaving in them a consistent legacy in the largest meaning of the term. As a consequence, the project aims at developing a broader research that may also include analysis of indigenous (Nuragic) contexts end cultural interactions between Levantine people and local communities.

The project is carried out in collaboration with the Department of “Biblische Einleitung und Zeitgeschichte” (Theologicum) and it currently encompasses several specific collaborations with Departments and Instituts of research in Germany and Italy (focused, for instance, on the Archaeology of Production, Archaeometry, etc.).
