Die Auszeichnung würdigt sein besonderes Engagement in der Lehre sowie seinen kontinuierlichen Einsatz für die Betreuung und Förderung der Studierenden.

Der enge Austausch mit den Studierenden, die Begleitung ihrer akademischen Entwicklung sowie die Bereitstellung zeitnaher Unterstützung und Services stehen im Mittelpunkt seiner Arbeit und bilden zentrale Bestandteile seines Lehrverständnisses.

Gestern holte der Lehrstuhl Managerial Accounting seine Weihnachtsfeier mit einem gemeinsamen Abend beim 3D-Schwarzlicht-Minigolf nach. Die farbenfrohe Atmosphäre sorgte für einen bunten, aufregenden und rundum gelungenen Abend, der allen großen Spaß bereitete. Anschließend ließen wir den Ausflug bei leckerem Essen in entspannter Runde ausklingen.

Stefanie Ehmann und Stefanie Wolter sprachen kürzlich mit der WirtschaftsWoche über ein Thema, das viele Familienunternehmen bewegt: Wer steht bei Firmen in Familienbesitz an der Spitze, Familienmitglieder oder externe Manager:innen, und wie wirkt sich das auf die Zufriedenheit und Motivation der Mitarbeitenden aus? Gerade bei der Nachfolgeplanung ist die Balance zwischen Tradition und Professionalisierung eine zentrale Herausforderung und prägt langfristig die Unternehmenskultur.

Familienunternehmen arbeiten oft mit weniger formalen Managementpraktiken, wie zum Beispiel standardisierten Zielvereinbarungen oder Feedbackgesprächen. Jedoch mindert das die wahrgenommene Arbeitsqualität nicht unbedingt. Stattdessen sind Vertrauen, persönliche Beziehungen und eine starke Unternehmenskultur entscheidend. Gleichzeitig können externe Führungskräfte die Arbeitsqualität zusätzlich steigern. Unternehmen, die vollständig von nicht-familiären Manager:innen geleitet werden, erreichen teilweise sogar höhere Zufriedenheit, hier verbindet sich professionelles Management mit Familienwerten. Bei Betrieben mit vielen hochqualifizierten Mitarbeitenden sind formelle Strukturen und klare Regeln hingegen wieder wichtiger, um gleiche Möglichkeiten für alle zu schaffen und die Arbeitsqualität hoch zu halten. Für die Nachfolgeplanung zeigt sich also: Die richtige Balance zwischen familiären Werten und professionellen Strukturen kann den langfristigen Erfolg unterstützen.

Prof. Kampkötter appointed to advisory board of Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales

Prof. Dr. Patrick Kampkötter, Chair of Managerial Accounting, has been appointed to the Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (Bundesministerium für Arbeit und Soziales) for the field of Work Quality and Economic Success (Arbeitsqualität und wirtschaftlicher Erfolg). In this role, he will contribute his expertise to one of the ministry’s central advisory bodies, which focuses on topics such as work quality, productivity, and employee and firm development.

The Advisory Board’s mission is to identify, based on scientific evidence, key issues relevant to the design of future labor market and employment policies. Prof. Kampkötter’s appointment underscores his commitment to bridging research and practice - translating empirical findings into actionable recommendations for policymakers that support improved work quality and employee well-being in firms.

Prof. Kampkötter has been closely involved in the development of the data set Linked Personnel Panel since 2012. This dataset is one of the most important sources for studying the relationships between management practices, individual work quality, and firm success.

Stefanie Ehmann, Patrick Kampkötter, and Julian Wenzel have published an article in Personalmagazin 11/2025 reporting on their study of developments and trends in performance management in German companies over the period 2012–2023 (co-authored with Philipp Grunau). The article also highlights the effects of performance management on employees’ job quality.

The study was conducted by the Chair of Managerial Accounting in cooperation with the Institute for Employment Research (IAB) on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs.

New paper on family firms published in the Journal of Economic Behavior & Organization

Stefanie Ehmann, Patrick Kampkötter, and Julian Wenzel have published the paper “In the hand of the family: Management practices and perceived job quality” in the Journal of

Economic Behavior & Organization (co-authored with Stefanie Wolter (IAB)). The paper can be downloaded HERE.

This paper explores the use and implications of management practices in family-owned firms compared to firms with dispersed ownership. We make use of a longitudinal, representative employer–employee dataset with detailed data on firm-level management practices and family firm management types. The analysis reveals that differences in the adoption of structured management practices are predominantly driven by management type rather than ownership. Family-owned firms led by family members implement significantly fewer formal management practices, whereas those managed by non-family managers adopt more structured practices, though still below the levels observed in firms with dispersed ownership. Yet, employees in family-owned firms, particularly those with non-family managers, rate job quality (e.g., job satisfaction, procedural fairness, leadership quality) similarly or superior despite fewer formal practices. These findings suggest that informal practices and a distinctive firm culture in family-owned firms may foster employee motivation and partially substitute for formal management structures. Importantly, additional heterogeneity analyses reveal that this substitution is only effective for lower-skilled employees and those in non-managerial positions, while formal management practices remain critical for higher-skilled and supervisory roles.

Die FAZ berichtet über eine neue Studie, die der Lehrstuhl für Managerial Accounting zusammen mit dem Institut für Arbeitsmarkt- und Berufsforschung im Auftrag des Bundesministeriums für Arbeit und Soziales verfasst hat. Die Studie stellt die Entwicklungen und Trends im Bereich Performance Management in deutschen Betrieben über den Zeitraum 2012-2023 dar und zeigt auch auf, welche Effekte das Performance Management auf die Arbeitsqualität der Beschäftigten hat.

Guest lecture by Horváth Management Consultants

On Monday, we had the pleasure of welcoming Caroline Schad (our former Master’s student) and Thomas Gommel from Horváth, a leading management consultancy, to our lecture Internes Rechnungswesen (Cost Accounting). Under the title "Controller as Corporate Performance Managers", Caro and Thomas gave the students interesting insights into the areas of performance management, the role of the controller, the importance of cost accounting for firms, and future trends and the impact of AI in controlling. We learned and took away a lot, and are always very happy about bridging research and practice. Thanks also to our students, who actively participated in the discussion.

We are already looking forward to our next exchange!

Neue Studie zu Personalmaßnahmen und wirtschaftlicher Erfolg

Eine der größten Herausforderungen im Personalmanagement ist die Frage nach der Effektivität der eingesetzten Personalmaßnahmen. Was bewirken sie tatsächlich – vor allem in Bezug auf wirtschaftlichen Erfolg? Der Personalbereich steht noch mehr als andere Querschnittsfunktionen unter Druck, den Wertbeitrag der Personalarbeit zum Unternehmenserfolg zu rechtfertigen. Denn die Investitionen in das „Humankapital“ sind hoch. Aber auch methodisch ist es herausfordernd, über reine Korrelationen hinaus kausale Aussagen über solche Wirkungszusammenhänge zu treffen.

Research workshop with the University of Ulm and the International Performance Research Institute

On December 4 and 5, 2024, we had the pleasure of hosting Prof. Mischa Seiter from the Chair of Interorganizational Management & Control at Universität Ulm and his team from the IPRI - International Performance Research Institute for a research workshop here at Eberhard Karls Universität Tübingen.

After dinner together on Wednesday, on Thursday we discussed current research projects on topics such as earnings conference calls during times of crisis, the use of relative performance information, AI and supervisor advise, management accounting practices and machine learning, and ESG metrics in executive compensation.

Many thanks to all colleagues from Universität Ulm and IPRI - International Performance Research Institute for the fruitful and exciting exchange.

New working paper on ESG Incentives in Executive Compensation

Stefanie Ehmann and Patrick Kampkötter have published a new working paper co-authored with Matthias Efing and Raphael Moritz on the integration of ESG metrics into executives’ compensation contracts. The paper can be downloaded HERE .

The paper examines the integration of ESG performance metrics into executive compensation using a detailed panel dataset of European executives. Despite becoming more widespread, most ESG metrics are largely discretionary, carry immaterial weights in payout calculations, and contribute little to executive pay risk. Such ESG metrics with arguably weak incentive power are common in financial firms and large companies, particularly for their most visible executives, which seems consistent with greenwashing. In contrast, binding ESG metrics with significant weights, which have potential to influence incentives, are only found in sectors with a large environmental footprint.

Interactive workshop with hkp/// group

Last Thursday we had the great opportunity to visit hkp/// group in Frankfurt am Main with a group of about 20 master students as part of our seminar "The Gender Pay Gap: Bridging Research & Practice". Our students prepared a variety of topics on the gender pay gap, such as decomposition methods, drivers of the gender pay gap, gender promotion gaps, gender ask gaps, or the effects of pay transparency and regulation on the gender pay gap.

From hkp/// group we received input on topics such as regulatory framework and investors’ expectations, the hkp///group Fair Pay approach, how to get from unadjusted to adjusted gender pay gap and we finally discussed measures to close the gender pay gap. It was a hands-on workshop where we also talked about the statistical models hkp///group is using in consulting projects and build an econometric model interactively.

Many thanks to Jennifer Schulz, Verena Vandervelt and Michael Haas for this wonderful day where we all learned incredibly much and for the hospitality. Such an exchange between firms and universities is extremely fruitful and enriching for our students and also for us.

Our paper “Offline volunteering during COVID-19: a survey experiment with prior and prospective blood donors” co-authored by Stefanie Ehmann, Michael Haylock, and Anne Kathrin Heynold has been accepted for publication at the Journal of the Economic Science Association.

In this paper, we explore how the inclination to donate blood during and after the COVID-19 lockdown is influenced by information about 1) blood donation urgency or about 2) measures taken to reduce the risk of transmission of SARS-CoV-2 at blood donation centres. To answer our research question, we conduct a survey experiment. Our results show that shortage information increases the willingness to donate blood substantially, especially for individuals who have never donated blood before. Hygiene information, however, is more likely to reduce the intention to donate blood.

The paper originates from a Master thesis that was written at our department.

We are pleased to announce that our new research assistant, Julian Wenzel, achieved an outstanding success at the graduation ceremony of the School of Business and Economics on November 24, 2023. After the master’s degrees were awarded by Professor Dr. Martin Ruf, the three best-performing Master's graduates of the cohort were awarded a prize by the EY Foundation (Ernst & Young Stiftung e.V., Stuttgart). Julian Wenzel received the 1st prize from the E&Y Foundation for his very strong academic performance. The award was presented by Dr. Joachim Brixner, and we are proud to welcome Julian Wenzel on board. Congratulations on this impressive achievement and we look forward to a successful collaboration.

Our paper “Performance management and work engagement - New evidence using longitudinal data” co-authored by Stefanie Ehmann, Patrick Kampkötter, Patrick Maier, and Philip Yang has been accepted for publication at Management Accounting Research, one of the top field journals in management accounting (JOURQUAL3: A).

In this paper, we investigate the impact of three important performance management and evaluation practices on employee-level work engagement, namely performance appraisal interviews, formal target agreements, and performance-related pay schemes. The main take-away of our study is that the usefulness of performance management practices as a tool to increase work engagement applies to firms of different sizes, industries, and ownership patterns.

From October 4-6, 2023, Prof. Matthias Efing, Associate Professor of Finance at HEC Paris, visited the department of Managerial Accounting to work on a joint research project on ESG Targets in Executive Compensation. Besides Matthias Efing, this research project is co-authored by Stefanie Ehmann and Patrick Kampkötter (Management Accounting) and Raphael Moritz (HRM and Organization). It was great to have Matthias here in Tübingen during these intense days of data work on our project.

New IZA working paper on Helping and Antisocial Behavior in the Workplace

Patrick Kampkötter has published a joint article with Michael Haylock, Michael Kosfeld, and Ferdinand von Siemens as an IZA Discussion Paper. The paper can be downloaded here.

The paper offers a comprehensive analysis of the organizational and behavioral foundations of employees' helping and antisocial behavior as an integral part of a firm's workplace culture and working climate. Using representative employer-employee panel data of larger German private-sector firms, the authors document a large variation in helping and antisocial behavior across firms. Regression results show that differences in supervisors' people skills, as well as workforce trust, social preferences, and personality traits explain these firm-level differences in helping and antisocial behavior in the workplace. The underlying measures are derived from established survey constructs and include preference items that have been behaviorally validated in experimental games by prior research. Together, the results corroborate the importance of both leadership quality and workforce composition for the manifestation of helpful and hostile workplace cultures.

The article makes use of a natural experiment to causally evaluate the impact of broadband internet on within-firm employment structures and, among other results, finds that the relative importance of managers increases.

The complementary use of experiments and field data to evaluate performance management practices

Der im Rheinland aufgewachsene Ökonom Patrick Kampkötter wurde 2011 an der Universität Köln promoviert. Das Thema seiner Dissertation lautete "Compensation and Performance - Empirical Studies on Wages, Bonus Payments, and Intra-Firm Trainings".

Dieses Themengebiet hat ihn in seiner weiteren Forschung nicht mehr losgelassen. Professor Kampkötters Forschungsarbeiten befassen sich mit Bonuszahlungen, die leistungsabhängig an Arbeitnehmer/innen gezahlt werden. Wie wirken sich diese auf die Motivation, die Performance der Belegschaft aus? Gibt es unterschiedliche Wirkungen, je nachdem, ob Bonuszahlungen an Mitarbeitende auf höheren Managementebenen oder auf unteren Ebenen gezahlt werden? Können Leistungsbeurteilungen objektiv sein? Wann besteht die Gefahr, dass finanzielle Anreizsysteme zur Unzufriedenheit bei Angestellten führen, so wie Volkmar Denner von Bosch es formulierte: "Money can be demotivating."

Viele Fragen, deren Erforschung nicht nur die Unternehmen, sondern auch politische Entscheidungsträger interessiert.

Zum 1. April 2016 wird Patrick Kampkötter die Professur für Managerial Accounting der Fakultät übernehmen. Seit 2011 war er Akademischer Rat am Lehrstuhl für ABWL und Personalwirtschaftslehre der Universität zu Köln. Vorher arbeitete er als Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter an der Universität zu Köln, wo er 2011 promoviert wurde. Außerdem verbrachte er während seiner Promotion einen Auslandsaufenthalt am Department of Finance des INSEAD, Fontainebleau.

Herr Kampkötter ist Mitglied des DFG-Schwerpunktprogramms 1764 (Projekt "Human Resource Management and Employee Retention: Empirical Analyses using new Linked Employer-Employee Data"'), des Center for Social and Economic Behavior (C-SEB) sowie assoziiertes Mitglied der DFG-Forschergruppe "Design and Behavior - Economic Engineering of Firms and Markets" (Projekt "Design of Incentive Schemes within Firms: Bonus Systems and Performance Evaluations"').

Seine Forschungsarbeiten widmen sich vor allem dem Bereich Performance Management, also dem Design und der Analyse von Vergütungs- und Anreizsystemen und deren Auswirkungen auf Unternehmens- und Arbeitnehmergrößen sowie den Unterschieden zwischen objektiver und subjektiver Leistungsbeurteilung. Ein weiterer Fokus liegt auf Aspekten der wertorientierten Unternehmenssteuerung. Seine Forschung zeichnet sich durch die Verwendung von mikroökonometrischen Analysemethoden und die Nutzung von großzahligen Datensätzen aus.

Am 15.09.2015 hat Dr. Carolin Mauch ihre Dissertation am Lehrstuhl Managerial Accounting zum Thema "Anreizmechanismen und Informationssysteme bei mehrdimensionalem Aufgabenspektrum" mit ihrer Disputation erfolgreich abgeschlossen. Erstgutachter war Prof. Dr. Jens Robert Schöndube, Zweitgutachterin war Prof. Dr. Anna Rohlfing-Bastian, den Prüfungsvorsitz hatte Prof. Dr. Werner Neus inne. Im Anschluss an die Disputation wurde dieses freudige Ereignis gefeiert.

Im Rahmen der Masterveranstaltung Controlling und Kostenanalyse fand am 27. Juni 2014 ein Praxisvortrag von Dr. Björn M. Dymke (Kaufmännischer Leiter der Trumpf Laser GmbH) statt. Der Alumnus der Universität Tübingen erläuterte anschaulich, wie bei der Trumpf GmbH das Verrechnungspreissystem aufgebaut ist. Neben dem Transfer theoretischer Konzepte in die praktische Realität erläuterte Herr Dymke auch deren tatsächliche Relevanz und führte aus, welche Probleme bei der Umsetzung entstehen. Der Vortrag verknüpfte erfolgreich die theoretische Lehre im Rahmen der Vorlesung mit den praktischen Erfahrungen im Unternehmskontext und bot den Studenten eine willkommene Abwechslung über den universitären Tellerrand hinauszuschauen.
