Course content

The program "Nano-Science" aims to reach prospective students with a broad interest in different natural sciences. Within the four study semesters, the program provides solid theoretical as well as practical basic knowledge in the subjects of biology, chemistry, and physics. Building on this knowledge, special nanoscientific courses and modules are offered. This knowledge as a whole enables the future graduates to enter the sector of nanotechnology and nanoscience in research, development, and production.

Selection process

The admission to the Nano-Science master program is restricted. At the moment, 40 university places are offered. The program commences each winter semester (starting in October). The study places are allocated according to an academic placement procedure with the following criteria: General information for the application: see link „Application and Enrollment“ at the right side above.

Admission prerequisites

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Nano-Science or related subjects with reference to Nano-Science, or in Physics or Chemistry or Biology. In the latter three subjects basic knowledge and basic experience in the nanoscientific core disciplines (quantum mechanics, physics of soft matter, physical chemistry, biophysics, special microscopy, nanotechnology, nanostructural sciences) of at least 18 ECTS credits must be documented.

A Bachelor grade of 3.0 (according to german grading scale) or better (see Examination and Study Regulations).

Applicants must provide proof of their English skills (at least B2 of the Gemeinsamen Europäischen Referenzrahmens für Sprache (GER)).

Foreign language requirements

German and English are the languages of instruction and examination in this degree program. Students are required to have adequate knowledge of the English language (at least B2 GER) in speech and writing. Many courses are conducted in English. The literature for advanced studies exists nearly exclusively in English.

Combination options

The Nano-Science program is a mono master program and cannot be complemented with a minor subject.

The Nano-Technology sector is one of the fastest-growing markets in the world. Graduates of our Nano-Science Master’s program have an excellent basis for working successfully at the interface of applied life sciences in a molecular and cell biological context.
