for the Awarding of Research Fellowships by the DFG Center for Advanced Studies "Migration and Mobility in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages” at the Eberhard-Karls-University of Tübingen
The Center for Advanced Studies "Migration and Mobility in Late Antiquity and the Early Middle Ages” at the University of Tübingen is an interdisciplinary and comprehensive research unit financed by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Foundation) and established by virtue of the grant approval of October 7th 2016 (ME 1749/10-1, AOBJ: 633828 applicant Prof. Dr. Mischa Meier, PA 825/10-1 AOBJ 633826 applicant Prof. Dr. Steffen Patzold and SCHM 2548/7-1 AOBJ: 633827 applicant Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schmidt-Hofner). The Center for Advanced Studies was created for an initial period of four years, with a possible extension for another four years. One of its main objectives is to enable joint research of the applicants with visiting scholars whose work is related to the Center´s interest in issues of migration and mobility in the above-mentioned historical period. To this aim, the Center awards fellowships to renowned and exceptionally qualified scholars from both Germany and abroad according to the following principles.
§1
The university is obliged to notify the tax office in the scholarships holder`s place of residence of scholarship payments of more than 1,500 euros annually. The decision on whether tax is payable rests with the granter´s tax office. The scholarship holder is responsible for any possible taxation.

The fellowships are advertised in internationally relevant mailing lists or other suitable media on an annual basis. Fellowships will be awarded from 2017 onwards. Fellows will be selected by mutual agreement between Prof. Dr. Mischa Meier, Prof. Dr. Steffen Patzold and Prof. Dr. Sebastian Schmidt-Hofner and one member of the rector´s office. A precondition for selection is that applicants have completed their doctoral degree and established an independent research profile in a field which is relevant to the central research areas of the Center. Further criteria for selection include an excellent academic record as documented through publications and international visibility.

Fellows will receive a monthly stipend to cover the costs of living and travel to and from Tübingen. The amount of the stipend depends on the academic career level of the fellow and follows the DFG standards for scholarly grants and stipends. Grants do not form the basis for an employment relationship, nor is such a relationship intended. The grant is not considered to be a remuneration in the sense of § 14 SGB IV (German Social Code).

The prinicipal duty of the fellows is to work on a research topic of their own choice which is related to the aims and interests of the Center. It is expected that fellows are regularly present at the Center (Keplerstr. 2, 72074 Tübingen) for the time of the fellowship, that they participate in the Center’s colloquia and workshops and that they are open to collaboration with other members of the Center. Fellows have no teaching duties. The fellows are responsible for independently arranging their travel to and from Tübingen as well as – with the assistance of the University’s Welcome Center - their accommodation.
