German Folk Dance (09/01/03)

Our dance lesson teacher was Elizabeth who is a very good dancer and less of a talker. She did a very good job on us in a few hours in as much as that some of us found out about their hidden dancing talents (Mr Thejane).
Elizabeth begun by teaching us Polka and Walts. She even went through the trouble of informing us about the historical essence behind these dances. I also had the honour of trying on one of the traditional outfits, which was my highlight of the lessons (see photo below). She also taught us German folk songs. Amongst there were “Frohsinn”, “Ade zur guten Nacht” and lastly, “Die Gedanken sind frei” as the group’s favourite. With an exception we all chose different career paths other than singing.
Historical information and the meaning of the songs was provided and readily available. This also reflected the different cultural patterns of Germany.
Although we all had fun there were people with appaling dancing skills (Linsay, Thembeka, …). The harder they tried, the worse it got. OOOOOH! It was FUN FUN FUN.
