Dance Evening (09/01/07)

Dance evening 2: Dancing to different rhythms
Hendrik Steyn

On Tuesday, 9 January 2007, we met at ISP for a dance evening with Marion as our instructor. However, this time it was something of a different kind. We were going to slow waltz, rumba and cha-cha.
As you might have read in "Folk Dance Seminar”: Dancing the day away" I am a bad and clumsy dancer who found my dancing shoes only recently. This time, however, I must have lost my dancing shoes because I could not get it right. From the start of the waltz I would forget a small move and we, Barbara and I, would find us suddenly out of rhythm to the music and then we had to start over again.
However, the rest of the group had lots of fun. You could hear the laughter for miles around as they danced and swirled around the room.
Now every one knows that dancing is an activity that heats the blood. For those who needed refreshment (to cool or heat the blood as required) there was beer, wine, juice or water. Barbara also provided us with some traditional party snacks of which one was a peanut buttered flavoured crisp kind of thing that cannot be found at home. The taste is extraordinary.
We ended the evening by playing some traditional African music and, those who were brave enough, did some traditional African dances.
Thank you Marion for teaching us to dance to a different rhythm. Thank you Barbara for the drinks and snacks and thank you Stephan for being there to keep us company.
