The following table shows all observations carried out with the echelle spectrometer during the ORFEUS II mission. The table may be displayed either sorted by ORFEUS ID or sorted by time or sorted by RA/DEC.
Note on the spectra
The following features are visible in some of the spectra, which are either artefacts or not part of the stellar spectrum:
- Testpulse peak:
Some spectra show a peak at 1317 Å in order 42, which is due to a not completely removed testpulse peak of the echelle electronics.
- Airglow and geocorona:
- Airglow: OI lines at 1302, 1305 and 1306 Å, also at 989 Å
- Geocorona: Ly-alpha (very strong) at 1216 Å, Ly-beta at 1026 Å

Links within the table
The following links are given within the table:
- Column ID_Obs.:
The link displays the JPEG Echelle image of this observation.
- Column Target Name:
The link shows an interactive page with a Java applet.
This applet displays the Echelle image of this observation. Moving the cursor
over the image will display the x/y-coordinates together with the
Echelle order and the wavelength at the current cursor position.
- Column Extracted Orders:
The link displays a GIF plot of the extracted spectrum.
- Column Download FITS files:
The link displays a page with links to data files in FITS format
of the Echelle image and of the extracted spectra, of which one single file
with all Echelle orders and individual files for each Echelle order are available.
See also the description of the FITS files.
Echelle Observations sorted by ORFEUS ID
Sort table by time
Sort table by RA / DEC
Description of columns: below table
Description of the columns:
- ID_Obs.
ID: Special ORFEUS target identification number (4 digits, see also
List of all ORFEUS Targets).
Obs: Observation number for this target, eventually followed by an underline character and the number
of the pointing during this observation. Several pointings during a single observation were carried out sometimes to
improve the alignment of the telescope ("grid search"). This resulted partially in very short integrations.
"_PH" denotes an integration from single photon events recorded onboard but integrated after the mission.
The link on ID_Obs. shows the JPEG Echelle image of this observation.
- Target Name:
The name of the object.
The link on Target Name shows an interactive page with a Java applet.
This applet displays the Echelle image of this observation. Moving the cursor over the image will display the
x/y-coordinates together with the Echelle order and the wavelength at the current cursor position.
- RA (2000) [hh mm ss.ss]:
Epoch 2000 coordinates: right ascension in [hh mm ss.ss]
- DEC (2000) [dd mm ss.ss]:
Epoch 2000 coordinates: declination in [dd mm ss.ss]
- Obs. Block:
Number of the Echelle observation block. 9 blocks of continuous observation were carried out with the
Echelle spectrometer.
- Obs. Start Time [GMT]:
Time of the beginning of the observation in GMT ddd:hh:mm:ss. ddd = day of year 1996; hh:mm:ss = time in GMT.
- Obs. Stop Time [GMT]:
Time of the end of the observation in GMT ddd/hh:mm:ss. ddd = day of year 1996; hh:mm:ss = time in GMT.
- Exposure Time [s]:
Integration time in seconds of this observation.
- Count Rate [counts/s]:
Count rate within the integrated image (total counts in image / integration time).
- vhelio [km/s]:
Heliocentric radial velocity for this observation.
- vorbit [km/s]:
Orbital radial velocity for this observation.
- vadd [km/s]:
Addition radial velocity used for wavelength correction.
- vblock [km/s]:
Wavelength correction due to the drift of the wavelength scale by time, expressed as radial velocity correction.
For each Echelle observation block an average wavelength correction was estimated (see
J.Barnstedt, N.Kappelmann, I.Appenzeller et al.,
Astronomy & Astrophysics Suppl. Ser. 134, 1998, 561-568
[astro-ph/0006295] for details).
- Extracted Orders:
The range of the Echelle orders extracted. Usually all visible orders form 40 to 61 were extracted.
In some cases not all orders could be extracted due to low intensity. For some images no extraction exist at all.
The link on Extracted Orders shows a GIF plot of the extracted spectrum.
- Wavelength Range [Å]:
The extracted wavelength range for this observation.
- Download FITS files:
Observation and range of extracted Echelle orders.
The link displays a page with links to data files in FITS format of the Echelle image and of the
extracted spectra, for which one single file with all Echelle orders and individual files for each Echelle order are
available. See also the description
of the FITS files.
