research project
The Semantics of Ecphrasis in the Hellenistic Period
This project concerns itself with the analysis and interpretation of ecphrasis in the Hellenistic period and considers a broad conceptual spectrum of “ecphrases.” Within the framework of ecphrasis, visual perception and the phenomenon of phantasia both play important roles. The aesthetic and intellectual conceptions of beauty, ugliness, wholeness, as well as authenticity are all of relevance, despite the fact that they do not always fit with the descriptive categories of “aesthetics” as it was formed in the 19th century and projected back onto antiquity. The overall semantics of Hellenistic ecphrasis (in the broadest sense) is to be set against contemporary philosophical texts and considered in terms of generally concordant aesthetic parameters, since these texts, alongside the poetic texts, helped form the aesthetic discourse of this period.
