The following positions are available in the Department of Linguistics of the Faculty of Humanities beginning October 1st, 2024 or soon after.

2 PhD positions in Theoretical / Computational Linguistics / Cognitive Science
(m/f/d, E 13 TV-L, 65%)

The positions will be filled for a period of four years (3 + 1 after progress examination in the case of one of the two positions). Payment is at 65% of full time E13. The positions are associated with the project “Understanding of, and Explanations with, Large Language Models”, which is funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung (Momentum program), and the Cluster of Excellence “Machine Learning: New Perspectives for Science” at the University of Tübingen.

Requirements for employment are a completed M.A. or equivalent in a relevant field (Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Computational Linguistics, Machine Learning, or similar), near native-level of spoken and written English, and robust programming skills, as documented through course work or research projects. The positions require either a solid mathematical background and experience with Deep Learning libraries (e.g., PyTorch), or strong skills in (Computational) Linguistics or Cognitive Science with demonstrable affinity for modern language technology, statistics and mathematical modeling. Familiarity with experimental methods is welcome.

The project offers a cohesive interdisciplinary research environment at the University of Tübingen and a dedicated interdisciplinary project team. We offer the opportunity to acquire cutting-edge research methods, studying contemporary language technology (such as LLMs) from the point of view of Linguistics and Cognitive Science.
