Interdisciplinary Centre for Global South Studies

ICGSS Working Groups Program

CALL FOR APPLICATIONS

Interdisciplinary Research Networks on and with the Global South

University of Tübingen | Interdisciplinary Centre for Global South Studies (ICGSS)

The Interdisciplinary Centre for Global South Studies (ICGSS) at the University of Tübingen invites researchers, scholars, and academic collectives to apply for its Working Groups Program — an initiative designed to foster sustained intellectual dialogue, consolidate transdisciplinary research networks, and generate lasting contributions to the study of the Global South.

About the Program

The ICGSS Working Groups Program creates institutional spaces for collaborative inquiry on and with the Global South. We understand the Global South not merely as a geographic category, but as an epistemological horizon that challenges dominant knowledge frameworks and opens new possibilities for critical, post- and decolonial scholarship.

Working groups will be integrated into the ICGSS network as active research platforms, connected to our academic community, events, and communication channels.

What We Offer

Accepted working groups will receive:

  • Institutional visibility through the ICGSS website and digital platforms
  • Newsletter coverage to disseminate activities, findings, and events
  • Access to ICGSS flagship events — the Spring Academy and the International Forum on Global South Studies — as spaces for presenting work and expanding networks
  • Additionally, they can apply for financial support of up to €2,000 for the organization of a specific academic event (workshop, seminar, or similar), subject to a supplementary funding application

The financial support is intended to enable a concrete academic activity that leaves a multimedia record — such as a video documentation, a web publication, or a digital presentation — contributing to the long-term visibility of the group's work.

What We Are Looking For

We welcome applications from groups whose work reflects one or more of the following orientations:

  • Critical perspectives on knowledge production, institutions, or social processes
  • Interdisciplinary approaches that cross disciplinary boundaries within the humanities and social sciences
  • Transcontinental networks, particularly those connecting researchers from universities in the Global South
  • Thematic relevance to current critical debates in areas such as ecological justice, political temporalities, gender and feminist epistemologies, digital societies and AI, or sonic, cultural and literary studies

Eligibility and Requirements

Applications are open to researchers at the University of Tübingen and their international collaborators. Working groups must demonstrate:

  • A minimum of 3 members from at least 2 different disciplines or faculties
  • research agenda connected to (trans) area studies on and with the Global South
