Biography

Sarah Liu is a Senior Lecturer (Associate Professor) of Gender and Politics in the School of Social and Political Science at the University of Edinburgh. Her research examines cross-national patterns in gender and politics, focusing on how contexts — women's political representation, women's movements, and immigration in the media shape gender gaps in political attitudes and participation. Sarah’s recent work also explores the gendered and racialized consequences of COVID-19 and offers critical analyses of neoliberal transformations in higher education. She serves on the editorial boards of Political Behavior and the Journal of Taiwan Studies and has previously held editorial roles with Representation: A Journal of Representative Democracy and Politics, Groups, and Identities.  Her scholarship has been recognized by the Apolitical Foundation as one of the 50 influential scholars, and the University of Michigan’s National Center for Institutional Diversity has named her an emerging diversity scholar. Sarah’s research appears in leading journals and has been featured in The Conversation UK and The Washington Post Monkey Cage and appeared on BBC World, France 24, and so on. Sarah holds a dual Ph.D. in Political Science and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies from Penn State.
