Former ERCCT Fellow and INDSR Researcher Sheu Jyh-Shyang Gave Public Talk

Former ERCCT Fellow, Dr. Sheu Jyh-Shyang 許智翔 from the Institute of National Defense and Security Research in Taipei gave a public lecture at the ERCCT on Monday, November 27, 2023. In his talk, which was titled 'Grey zone activities and asymmetric warfare - Taiwan's defence dilemma', Dr. Sheu analysed the problem of how Taiwan can most effectively deal with the potential military threats from larger powers and the PLA's constant military provocations which remain below the treshold of direct violent confrontation, nevertheless present some level of threat and are therefore aptly termed 'grey zone activities'.

ERCCT Received Visit by the Prof. Shaw Fu-Zen, Dean of the College of Social Sciences at NCKU

The CCKF-ERCCT received the dean of the College of Social Sciences of National Cheng Kung University, Prof. Shaw Fu-Zen 蕭富仁, who visited the center on 4 July 2023. The talks, hosted by CCKF-ERCCT Co-Director Prof. Tseng Yu-chin and CCKF-ERCCT Managing Director Stefan Braig, took stock of the past and current academic exchange relations between the CCKF-ERCCT and the College of Social Sciences at NCKU and deliberated on perspectives for continuation and deepening of contacts. Dean Prof. Shaw also gave a thorough introduction of the structures, developments, and numerous achievements of the College. The meeting was joined by CCKF-ERCCT Visiting Scholar Prof. Lee Po-Han 李柏翰 from the Institute of Health Policy and Management and the Institute of Health Behaviours and Community Sciences at National Taiwan University, by CCKF-ERCCT Visiting Fellow Dr. Tsai Jia-Shin 蔡嘉信 from the Institute of Sociology at Academia Sinica, by CCKF-ERCCT Short-Term Resident Fellow Dr. Daniel Davies from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, and by CCKF-ERCCT Resident Fellow Judy Lee 李爾雅 who all enhanced the event through brief reports about their research, thereby giving a vivid impression of the great diversity of Taiwan Studies.

ERCCT Director Prof. Schubert held public talk on Taiwan's predicament

ERCCT Director Professor Schubert revisited Taiwan's difficult relation with the notions of "China" and "nation" in a pulbic talk he gave on Thursday, 9 Februrary 2023, titled "The Taiwan predicament revisited - Geopolitics, national identity and the 'China threat'". It was a very interesting and diginified finale to the winter semester's GCS and Taiwan Colloquia.

Oct. 26 - Documentary Film Screening - Zhang Hong-Jie's "When the Dawn Comes"

On Tuesday, October 26, the ERCCT presented Zhang Hong-Jie張弘榤‘s documentary film “When the Dawn Comes” 黎明到來的那一天 (Taiwan 2021, 59 minutes), a sympathetic portrait of Chi Chia-Wei 祁家威, the father of Taiwan’s gay right’s movement. The screening took place in local movie theatre Kino Arsenal and was part of the theatre’s first Queer Film Festival. The screening was followed by a Q&A with ERCCT managing director Stefan Braig. The ERCCT is grateful to Kino Arsenal to provide this opportunity to make a contribution the QFF.

May 3 - Visit to Partner Institutions at National Sun Yat-Sen University

On May 3rd, Prof. Gunter Schubert, ERCCT director, visited the Department of Sociology and the Institute of Political Science at National Zhongshan University in Kaohsiung, which are long-term ERCCT partner institutions. He held a talk and gave an ERCCT work report to faculty and students. Prof. Schubert, who has been in Taiwan since early March, also visited other ERCCT partners and briefed them on the ERCCT's activities under the current conditions of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Talk and Discussion about Taiwanese films with Chris Berry

On Wednesday, June 24, 2020, the ERCCT, in ccoperatin with China Centrum Tübingen (CCT), presented a talk and discussion with Chris Berry, professor of film studies at King's College London, online. Entitled "Modernity, Gender, Sexuality: Social Values in Taiyupian", the talk referred to two Taiwanese movies that are part of the project on taiyupian  台語片, "Taiwan's Lost Commercial Cinema" (by film scholars Prof. Berry and Dr. Ming-Yeh Rawnsley). One was "Foolish Bride, Naive Bridegroom" 三八新娘憨女婿, a comedy from 1967 by Xin Qi, and the second, "Like Father, Like Daughter" 前世情人的情人, was a modern sequel to the first. Both films has been available to registered users to be viewed online for four days prior to the event.

Jun. 17 - Film Screening: "Our Youth in Taiwan"

In cooperation with Tübingen's Association of Taiwanese Students and generously supported by the Taipei Representative Office in the Federal Republic of Germany, the ERCCT screened documentary film maker Fu Yue's 2018 documentary on the Sunflower Protets 2014 "Our Youth in Taiwan" (我們的青春在臺灣) on Monday, 17 June 2019. 

Fu Yue 傅榆, who won the 2018 Golden Horse Award for the best documentary film for this work, herself attended the screening together with the head of the Taipei Representative Office, Prof. Shieh Jhy-Wey 謝志偉 and entered into a lively discussion with the huge audience in the cinema Kino Arsenal.

Nov. 30 - Concert: El Otro Fin del Mundo

On November 30, 2018, the ERCCT hosted a concert by Twango, a Latin American-East Asian music ensemble consisting of taiwanese band leader Wu Ruei-Ran 吳睿然, japanese violinist Asayama Kaoru, Uruguayan bass player and singer Felipe Medina, and Argentian pianist Diego Collatti. The concert was organised in cooperationth with Mrs. Tsai Tsai-Wei of Hohaiyan e.V. 好海洋藝術, a cultural association for the promotion of Taiwanese performing arts in Germany. 

The programme of the evening was entitled El Otro Fin del Mundo 世界的另一個盡頭 and featured Tangos and arrangements of Taiwanese and Latin American traditional songs.

Jun. 21 - CCK Foundation Anniversary Lecture Held in Tübingen by Prof. Su Yeong-Chin

In celebration of the 30th Anniversary of the Chiang Ching-kuo Foundation for International Scholarly Exchange, the CCKF-ERCCT in cooperation with the Tübingen China Centre hosted a public lecture by Professor Dr. Su Yeong-chin (蘇永欽, College of Law, National Chengchi University) at the Weltethos-Institut Tübingen (WEIT) on Thursday, June 21, 2020.

Prof. Su, who is a former Honourable Judge and Vice-President of the Judicial Yuan and who got is Judirical Doctorate from Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität, Munich, talked (in excellent german) on the topic Recent Plans for Reform of Constitutional Procedure in Taiwan, enlightening the numerous audience also on various aspects of the organisation, history, competences, work style etc. of the Judicial Yuan and its Council of Grand Justices.

The lecture was followed by a lifely discussion between Professor Su and the audience and, later on, a dinner reception at the CCT, during which Prof. Su, who is a member of the European Regional Committee of the CCK Foundation, delivered a welcoming speech on behalf of the Foundation.

Feb. 11 - Concert: Magic Flutes of East and West

On Feb. 11, 2018 the ERCCT co-hosted a concert by Trio Piazzolla and Chung-Shen CHEN. Under the headline "Magic Flutes of East and West" the troupe performed arrangements of western classical pieces besides several chinese traditionals. The concert itself was preceded by a vivid introduction of classical chinese flutes. At the end, three encores had to be given to the enthused audience.

Oct. 23 - Anthology of Newly Translated Taiwanese Literature in Tübingen

ANTHOLOGY OF NEWLY TRANSLATED TAIWANESE LITERATURE LAUNCHED IN TÜBINGEN

On Monday, 23 October 2017, the ERCCT, in cooperation with the Deutsch-Chinesische Gesellschaft e.V. - Freunde Taiwans hosted the launch of an anthology of newly translated Taiwanese literature entitled "Kriegsrecht - Neue Literatur aus Taiwan" (Martial Law: New Literature from Taiwan). At the cosy venue of Café Haag, the editor, Dr. Thilo Diefenbach (Berlin), read and commented on sections from the translations of stories from the early times of Taiwan's martial law era to the year 2016, before entering into a very insightful discussion with Taiwan's highest diplomatic representative in Germany, Prof. Dr. Shieh Jhy-Wey, himself a prominent scholar of literature. The evening was topped off by the wonderful performance of Taiwanese songs by two young Taiwanese string players from nearby Stuttgart.

Impression Formosa - ERCCT Hosted Chamber Concert

IMPRESSION FORMOSA - ERCCT HOSTED MUSICAL CONCERT

On 2 December 2016, the ERCCT hosted a chamber musical concert by Katharina Foung, 馮孝慈 (Piano), Yu-Shih Yu 游適伃 (Cello), Natalia Karpova (Piano), Shih-Cheng Yu 劉士誠 (Flute), and Han-Lin Liang 梁涵琳 (Violin) in cooperation with Mrs. Tsai Tsai-Wei of Hohaiyan e.V. 好海洋藝術, a Munich-based cultural organisation for the promotion of Taiwanese performing arts in Germany. 

The programme featured compositions by modern and contemporary Taiwanese composers as well as by western composers. 

Full House at the screening of "CHILDREN OF THE SUN" on April 20, 2016

The sold-out movie theatre Arsenal was packed tigthtly as more than one hundred people joined us for the screening of the film "Children of the Sun" on April 20. The screening was followed by a Q&A session, and the directors, Cheng Yu-chieh 鄭有傑 and Lekal Sumi 勒嘎·舒米, answered questions from the interested audience for half an hour.

Documentary Film "Almost Home Taiwan" by Victoria Lin-Chong

On Thursday, November 26, the ERCCT screened the documentary film "Almost Home Taiwan" by actor, screenwriter, and filmmaker Victoria Linchong 林鍾維春 from New York. The film drew a large audience and inspired a lively discussion on questions of Taiwanese history, politics, and society.

Documentary Film on the Sunflower Movement Screened on Tübingen

In cooperation with the 330 Taiwan Freedom and Justice Action Alliance the CCKF-ERCCT hosted a screening of Taiwaneses documentary film maker Chou Shih-Lun's 周世倫 work aobut the Sunflower social movement, which rocked Taiwan in spring 2014, "太陽,不遠 - 時代的共同記憶" (The Sunflower Occupation) in Tübingen on February 1st 2015, 3:30 p.m. at film theatre Kino Arsenal. Film director Chou Shi-Lun was present and CCKF-ERCCT Director Prof. Gunter Schubert chaired the event and translated during the discussion between the director and the audience. The film was shown in Chinese with english subtitles.
