Talking about Divine Action -

Exploring the Trilemma between what is said, what is meant and divine mystery

 

Subgrant within the framework of the project "New Horizons for Science and Religion in Central and Eastern Europe", The Ian Ramsay Centre for Science and Religion, University of Oxford

 

In the project, the theological, philosophical and especially the linguistic preconditions of the speech of God`s action will be examined more closely within the framework of two conferences.


The first conference (June 2023) will focus on questions of the semantics and pragmatics of talk about God: What meaning do expressions such as "saves", "acts", "reconciles" etc. have when they are taken out of the human context of application and said about God? How can the intended meanings of religious expressions also be inferred: what processes of understanding are assumed here and what linguistic means are used? More detailed information on the conference can be found here.


In a second conference (April 2024), the focus will be on current concepts of God's action, especially in the philosophy of religion, which will be brought into conversation with theological concepts. The overall aim is to bring strands of debate that tend to diverge closer together again and to explore constructive points of contact. The main point of reference for the conference is Wolfhart Pannenberg's theology. The conference, which is being organised in cooperation with the international collaboration "Pannenberg Symposium", not only commemorates the theologian, who died 10 years ago, and his reflections, which are still highly stimulating today. It also aims to establish an international network of Pannenberg researchers. You can find information to the conference here.
