Westlichsprachige Inhalte bei CrossAsia
Das Angebot CrossAsias konzentriert sich traditionell auf die Sprachgebiete Chinesisch, Japanisch und Koreanisch (CJK). Die verfügbaren Datenbanken sind daher überwiegend aus diesen Regionen und in deren Sprachen. Aus diesem Grund und weil man normalerweise für westlichsprachige Ressourcen zunächst im eigenen Universitätskatalog oder auch im übergeordneten Karlsruher Virtuellen Katalog (KVK) sucht, worin die bei CrossAsia verfügbaren Titel erst jetzt sukzessiv nachgewiesen werden, übersieht man leicht das bei CrossAsia vorhandene westlichsprachige Angebot.
Zitat aus der Selbstbeschreibung von MUSE: “[…] For over 20 years, Project MUSE has been the trusted and reliable source of complete, full-text versions of scholarly journals from many of the world's leading universities and scholarly societies.” Project MUSE ist angesiedelt an der John Hopkins University, Baltimore.
Man landet von CrossAsia aus per Umleitung auf der übergeordneten Seite „muse.jhu.edu“. CrossAsia hat praktisch alle dort verfügbaren Zeitschriften lizenziert (ca. 700 Titel), aber nicht die Bücher. Allerdings sind über 1000 Buchtitel als Open Access verfügbar. Bei den Zeitschriften sind enorm viele relevante englischsprachige Titel vorhanden, schon die einfache Suche nach "China" im Titel bringt diese Treffer:

Achtung: man landet von CrossAsia aus per Umleitung auf der übergeordneten Seite „brill.com“, wo die Asian Studies Collections nur ein Teil der dort verfügbaren E-Books sind. Dieser Teil deckt aber das für Asienwissenschaftler*innen relevante Themengebiet sehr gut ab und es kommen ständig Neuerscheinungen hinzu. Noch ein Hinweis: dass man überhaupt Zugang zu Volltexten hat, erkennt man ganz unten auf der Seite.
Die Firma ProQuest ist hervorgegangen aus University Microfilms International (UMI). Der Kern des Angebots sind daher Dissertationen aus dem US-amerikanischen Raum: “The database offers full text for most of the dissertations added since 1997 and strong retrospective full text coverage for older graduate works.”
Die von CrossAsia lizenzierte Datenbank umfasst die "Themengebiete: Literatur & Sprache, Dissertationen & Abschlussarbeiten, Sozialwissenschaften, Geschichte, Kunst. Zeitraum:1637 – aktuell“ (Zitat aus der Beschreibung der Datenbank bei CrossAsia).
Vor der Lizenzierung dieser Volltext-Datenbank war es aufwändig und teuer an diese Dissertation zu kommen.
