In the presence of Golden Horse Award winning documentary film maker Tsai Tsung-Lung 蔡崇隆, the ERCCT hosted its 18th Taiwan Documentary Film Festival on Friday and Saturday, December 13 and 14, 2024 at the cinema Kino Atelier in Tübingen. At the beginning ERCCT Director Prof. Dr. Gunter Schubert welcomed the audience, guest director Tsai and also First Secretary Ms. Chiang Yi-Ping from the Taipei Representative Office branch in Munich, who herself officially greeted the audience in her opening remakrs and conveyed greetings on behalf of Director General Dr. Dieu Ian-tsing, who generously sponsored the this year's event.
Topically focusing on the plight of migrant workers from southeast asia in Taiwan, the program featured five documentaries that were directed or produced by Tsai Tsung-Lung, often in cooperation with his wife Nyuen Kim-Hung. The particularly dramatic headliner "And Miles to Go Before I Sleep", which won Tsai the Golden Horse 2022, was screened on Friday afternoon at 4 p.m. after a presentation of introductory notes by Taiwan migration scholar and ERCCT Advisory Board member Dr. Isabelle Cockel.
The very serious images of this documentary made a deep impression on the audience, who used the opportunity of the Q&A with the director to understand the background and upsetting reality behind the film.
In addition to the documentaries, the feature film "The Abandoned" (查無此心 by Tseng Ying-Ting, 20) was screened on Friday evening. As the plot of this thriller also centered on the fates of southeast asian migrant workers, it made for the perfect match to the documentaries shown this time.
