Abstract: This is a defense of Socrates’ master argument in Euthydemus 278-282—that is, his one general
argument that everyone should take up philosophy—and thus of his conclusion that the only good
thing for a human being is wisdom. I try to address the full range of doubts that have been registered
about the argument, and I take seriously a point that others have ignored, that it is a protreptic argument.
