(Why) Does It Matter Whether We Are Monists? An Analysis of Metaphysical Monism in German Idealism and Contemporary Metaphysics. 
Metaphysical monism, broadly understood, is the thesis that, when describing reality as a whole, a sense of oneness prevails over plurality. What this oneness means and how it relates to the plurality it prevails over varies:  Parmenides, Fichte, and, more recently, Michael Della Rocca speak of Being; Spinoza and Schelling of Substance or God, while Hegel understands the One as Spirit or the Absolute; other contemporary philosophers like Jonathan Schaffer take the one to be a concrete object, i.e., the existing cosmos. Despite their radically different theoretical frameworks, all these philosophers argue for a version of metaphysical monism. In my PhD project, I reconstruct some of these versions of monism and investigate what the different frameworks and argumentative strategies tell us about how we practice metaphysics. Specifically, I focus on Hegel’s Encyclopaedia 1830 (Philosophy of Nature and Philosophy of Spirit), Schelling’s Freedom Essay, and Fichte’s Wissenschaftslehre 1812 and contrast these with contemporary versions of monism.
