PhD Positions in Quantum Photonics & Quantum Information – Max Planck School of Photonics (Germany)

Application deadline: Tuesday, December 1, 2026

Employer web page: https://photonics.maxplanckschools.org/application

Job type: PhD

The Max Planck School of Photonics (MPSP) is accepting applications
for its PhD program, with start dates in 2027. MPSP is a Germany-wide
graduate school connecting leading groups at universities, Max Planck
Institutes and Fraunhofer Institutes. PhD candidates work in the group
of an MPSP Fellow, have a co-supervisor at another MPSP location, and
take part in joint schools and training events.

The positions will be funded as TV-L E13 75% positions by the Max Planck School.

Several Fellows offer projects in quantum information, including quantum
communication, photonic quantum computing, and quantum metrology. Both
groups from Daniel Braun in Tübingen (theoretical quantum metrology and quantum imaging)
and Otfried Gühne in Siegen (quantum information theory) are open for interested candidates.

Applicants should have an excellent Master’s degree in physics or a related field (or be close to completing one).
Applications, including at least two referee invitations, must be submitted via the online portal by December 1, 2026: https://photonics.maxplanckschools.org/application

PhD Position in experimental quantum metrology

The Physics Institute at the University of Tübingen is looking to fill a PhD Position (m/f/d) in Experimental Quantum Metrology (75% of an E13 TV-L position).
The fixed-term position will be offered for four years and focuses on the experimental realization of a spin-exchange relaxation free (SERF) magnetometer with sensitivity beyond the standard quantum limit. The position will be based at the Physics Institute at the University of Tübingen, Germany, and is partially funded by the Center of Integrated Quantum Science and Technology (IQST). The research will be supervised by Dr. Andreas Günther and Prof. Dr. Daniel Braun. The successful PhD candidate will be integrated into the IQST Graduate School @QuantumBW. As part of the program, the PhD candidate will perform a three-months technical training at a local high-tech industrial partner (HighFinesse Laser and Electronic Systems GmbH).
Your responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for the further development and experimental investigation of a highly sensitive SERF magnetometer. The work will involve the development and optimization of laser-based optical systems as well as the planning, conduction and analysis of optical magnetometry experiments.
Your profile
We are looking for a highly motivated and excellent candidate with experience in the design, setup and operation of experimental quantum optics and/or quantum metrology experiments.
The ideal candidate will have:
• an excellent master’s degree in physics or an equivalent degree;
• experience with laser-based optical systems;
• experience with alkali-vapor magnetometers and/or related atomic-physics experiments;
• strong experimental skills and an interest in developing and operating sophisticated quantum-optical experiments;
• experience and interest in numerical simulations and theoretical modeling of quantum-optical and magnetometer systems.
The candidate must be proficient in written and spoken English. Knowledge of German is not required but would be considered an asset.
What we offer
The University of Tübingen is one of the Excellence Universities in Germany. It is home to a vibrant research community with very strong research activities in quantum physics.
We are committed to an open and collaborative research culture in which original thinking and academic excellence are encouraged and supported. The successful candidate will benefit from integration into the IQST Graduate School and dedicated technical training.
How to apply
Interested candidates are invited to submit:
• a CV, including a list of publications, if applicable;
• a transcript of academic records; and
• two letters of recommendation, which should be sent directly to the same address.
Please send your application documents to:
Prof. Dr. Daniel Braun, daniel.braun@uni-tuebingen.de
Application deadline: November 1st, 2026.
We encourage applications from all nationalities, backgrounds, and genders. Disabled persons will be preferred in case of equal qualifications. The University Tübingen seeks to raise the number of women in research and therefore strongly encourages qualified women to apply.
