Baden-Württemberg Center for Brazil and Latin America

Registration open and abstract submissions accepted until 19 April 2026

Following the successful 2024 edition, held at the University of Tübingen (Germany), the next edition of the German-Brazilian Symposium for Sustainable Development will take place from 15 to 19 June 2026 in Belém, Pará, Brazil, hosted by the Federal University of Pará (UFPA) and coordinated by the Center for Advanced Amazonian Studies (NAEA). The choice of Belém as the venue was decided during the last symposium in 2024.

The title of the 2026 edition is “Responsible Science for a Sustainable Future”.

The event is organized jointly by UFPA / NAEA, the Baden-Württemberg Center for Brazil and Latin America, the German Centre for Research and Innovation São Paulo (DWIH São Paulo), University of Hohenheim, and the Leuphana University (Lüneburg).

The first German-Brazilian Symposium for Sustainable Development was held in 2003 in Tübingen, Germany, and since then it has alternated between the two countries every other year. The symposium provides a platform for inter- and transdisciplinary exchange among German and Brazilian researchers and strengthens bilateral cooperation connecting innovation and sustainable development.

Program
The program encompasses plenary lectures, thematic sessions, a poster session, interactive workshops, and open debates. The four main thematic sessions are:

  1. Sustainable agri-food systems for a resilient future

  2. Strategies to strengthen resilience and sustainability in cancer research and drug development

  3. Development alternatives for a bioeconomy based on Amazonian socio-biodiversity

  4. Responsible resource extraction (mining) for a sustainable future — utopia or possibility?

Each thematic session has a binational team responsible for selecting guest speakers and establishing criteria for selecting submitted papers, ensuring regional balance and gender equity. Each panel will feature between 15 and 20 presentations.

The workshops address cross-cutting issues of the symposium, including scientific cooperation, sustainability, bioeconomy, and scientific communication.
