Research

“I am a Paleolithic archaeologist specializing in African Middle Stone Age (MSA) and European Middle Palaeolithic lithic technologies with a strong enthusiasm for archaeological excavation and fieldwork. My research investigates the technological behaviors of past human populations during the Upper Pleistocene, with a particular focus on understanding patterns of technological change and variability in stone tool production. I examine how technological systems changed across space and through time, and explore the environmental, cultural, and behavioral factors that influenced this variability.
My research integrates traditional technological analysis of lithic assemblages with a chaîne opératoire and attribute-based approach, supported by quantitative statistical methods. This multidisciplinary framework allows to reconstruct reduction sequences, technological organization, and decision-making processes, providing insights into the adaptive strategies and behavioral flexibility of prehistoric hunter-gatherer populations.
I am particularly interested in the mechanisms that drive technological innovation, continuity, and change, and in how lithic technologies can be used to investigate broader questions of human adaptation, mobility, and cultural transmission during the Middle Stone Age and Middle Palaeolithic.
As a member of the Cluster of Excellence Human Origins, I am part of the research team investigating the archaeological sequence at Sibhudu Cave, South Africa. My current research focuses on the earliest MSA assemblages from the site.”
