PhD Project

The Middle Pleistocene locality Schöningen 13-II (Lower Saxony, Germany), dated c. 300 ka BP, is well-known for the exceptional preservation of at least eight wooden spears alongside several dozen horse carcasses. In addition to a wide variety of wooden, bone and stone tools and large faunal remains, these finds have played a central role in the discussion on the emergence of complex hunting behaviour. However, the bird bones and eggshells of the site had been left mostly unstudied until now. The project aims to carry out an integrated taxonomic and taphonomic analysis of the bird remains, incorporating innovative methods in the research of archaeological eggshell, As a result it will give insight into the presence and extent of bird exploitation by Paleolithic hominins at the site, as well as the environmental and ecological context in which their activities took place.
