International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS 2024)

Dr. Nafiseh Kakhani's Participation and Key Learnings

Dr. Nafiseh Kakhani recently attended the 2024 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) as a representative of our group, held from July 7-12 in Athens, Greece. This conference gathered leading experts, researchers, and practitioners from various fields to discuss the latest advancements and innovations in Remote Sensing.

Throughout the conference, Dr. Kakhani participated in several workshops and breakout sessions focused on recent advances in ML/DL, sensor development, and the application of RS data. These sessions provided valuable insights into geoscience, offering practical knowledge and new perspectives.

She also had the opportunity to present her own research in collaboration with Prof. Michael Mommert and Prof. Thomas Scholten on: "Advanced Prediction of Soil Organic Carbon: A Hybrid Transformer Network with Cost-Sensitive Learning Using Remote Sensing and Climate Data," which involved designing a new loss function in DL models for more accurate prediction of soil organic carbon. The presentation was well-received, generating significant interest and constructive feedback from the audience. This experience was invaluable for sharing ideas and gaining new insights from peers and experts in the field. The full paper will be published in IEEE proceedings, and more information in this regard can be found here (more automation will come soon; stay tuned).

Overall, IGARSS 2024 was a highly informative and enriching experience. We are looking forward to applying the knowledge gained and contributing to ongoing developments in the field.
