From the U.S. to Swabia

Upon completing my Bachelor's degree in the U.S., I was unsure what to do next. As I researched institutions and programs nationwide and abroad, the M.A. in Islamic and Middle Eastern Studies at the University of Tübingen caught my eye. Though I was no stranger to the country or the language, I had my reservations about the feasibility and practicality of such an endeavor. Mulling over these concerns, I decided to reach out to the department for more information.

From my very first conversation with Mr. Hintermann, who was then responsible for student counseling, my apprehensions began to fade. The support I received from Mr. Hintermann throughout the application process proved a standard among the other members of the department's valued faculty. I have enjoyed the privilege of a personalized learning environment, working closely with my faculty advisor, Mr. Demirel, to create a unique class schedule that enabled the fulfillment of academic requirements by taking interesting courses within and outside the department. Each of the courses I took was taught by exceptionally accessible teachers who are always willing to meet and discuss with students. Furthermore, regarding classes offered only in German, preference for writing final papers or exams in English is well accommodated.

The welcoming environment allowed me to quickly find a place at the university. Within weeks of my arrival, I was hired as a student assistant, and later worked with Dr. Bednarkiewicz on a research project. Apart from forging relationships with members of the faculty, I build friendships with my classmates and, joining the student council, helped organize events for the student body. All of these factors, combined with the experience of living in a beautiful city nestled in the Swabian Alps, make choosing the University of Tübingen for my Masters one of the best decisions I have ever made.
